EBV, Lyme Impact on Vagus Nerve Article

Found this interesting article on a theory involving vagus nerve. The The Vagus Nerve Infection Hypothesis (VNIH) proposes that, in some individuals, the symptoms of chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) are caused by an infection in or around the vagus nerve, the longest nerve of the autonomic nervous system in the human body.

The theory also considers EBV and Lyme impact. I apologize for my lack of understanding of how to change colors or bold on this site. This could explain the morning or any other anxiety, similar symptoms some experience.

It states:
"VanElzakker believes that any infectious agent with an affinity for nerve tissues can cause a vagus nerve infection, including HHV-6, Epstein-Barr virus, Varicella zoster virus, chickenpox, certain kinds of enteroviruses and even borrelia, the bacterium that causes Lyme disease. He thinks this could explain why no single infective agent has been isolated as the cause of CFS, even though all of these agents have been associated with disease.

WBF - To have all three of those symptoms at once can't be fun. Glad you were able to find some things to help keep in down some. Were your headaches migraines?

I have seen references to the vagus nerve with Lyme before, but had not seen any that, possibly, connect it with EBV or HHV-6. I'm now wondering if the morning anxiety I have every morning at 8:00 am is connected to the vagus nerve. It would make sense, just as it would with symptoms you are experiencing.

The fact you mentioned silent reflux is interesting as, recently, I've noticed reflux symptoms I have not experienced in years are back, to some degree. I'm going to do some more reading on vagus nerve. As of late, I've noticed migraines are back more, but they seem to be related to if I have any sugar and other foods.

Thanks for posting this is very helpful. I am dealing with extreme anxiety and panic attacks and I believe (this is just a hunch I have) that the vagus nerve is part of the problem. Because when my anxiety and panic gets bad and then I do 4-7-8 breathing exercises, EFT, and other things to try to kick down the anxiety and panic soon thereafter I usually belch a few times which is a sign the vagus nerve is settling down. Once the belching starts I start to feel some relief. I normally don't have any stomach issues or problems. I also notice that if I really eat too much (which I don't do very often), I start to get really anxious and the start of panic then when I belch a few times I start feeling back to normal.

Can Babesia cause the vagus nerve to act up? Or is it Bart, Lyme, Ehrlichiosis, etc?

I tested pos (igM) for Lyme in 2014. I have had excessive yawning. In 2014 it was a hyper active gag reflex.

I've had unexplained mild pancreatitis attacks, but have NEVER been a drinker in my life. Never even had a hangover.

I have been suffering from head rushes and skipping heartbeats, biliary colic. Strange burping sensation that turns into hiccups that get caught after eating spicy food.

From what I glean, this is vagus nerve related.

battler - Having the panic feeling is right up there with daily fatigue/fever. Do you have the panic at a certain time of the day or night?

Since mine happens in morning at 8:00 am, like setting an alarm, I have wondered if it is cortisol going over the top. However, all cortisol tests have come back in the higher range of normal. That's what led me to vagus nerve, and I've heard it mentioned on this site before.

The yawning and belching is something new to hear about. Nothing surprises me anymore, though. Hope all find answers to each situation.

Results from Armin Lab Elispot came back today with negative for borrelia, Bartonella and Babesia. The doctor only did Elispot test. Before, though Eli came back negative, but Tickplex for IgG on all and others came back crazy high. I've never understood if negative Elispot meant you should have no symptoms at present time, even with high IgG in Tickplex. Have no idea what is going on, but Lyme symptoms are still with me.

The more questions we have, the less answers are out there in the medical world or contradict each other.
