UTIs do seem common with these infections, but UTIs are relatively common in the general population, too!
I'm not sure if it's from the infections themselves or a combination of other factors (antibiotics, messed-up flora, various supplements, sedentary lifestyle, less regular bathing, meds, diet, etc.). Personally, I sometimes don't drink enough or hold in pee all day when I don't feel well because it's hard to get to the bathroom, both of which can predispose someone to an infection. Does your mom wear any sort of undergarment protection, such as for urinary incontinence, that might be trapping bacteria? Synthetic materials that allow more bacteria to grow, instead of cotton underwear? How about taking cranberry (either unsweetened juice or tablets) to acidify the urinary tract? Or D-mannose? Probiotics also can help.
Before taking abx for it again, I would insist upon culturing the bacteria to make sure a particular treatment will be effective. I'm sorry she's dealing with this so often!
