I was getting high blood sugar but taking valproate fixed it. The really surprising thing about this is that what it does is stimulate the growth of pancreatic beta cells. Those cells can produce insulin for several years. The high blood sugar did not come back when I stopped the valproate.
Sometimes my blood sugar would get low, and I would take hydrocortisone for that.
So you were taking valproate for other issues (?) and lowering glucose was an unforeseen side affect ?
It seems hydrocortisone can do either depending on the individual - if they have a beta cell issue or high cortisol to begin with. Coffee can elevate glucose in many people since in can elevate cortisol over the range.
My A1c was high in the past too.....now normal at 5.5.
Obviously not one reason for all.
