Im guilty for not reading the whole article, but most of it looks like a tick infection. Very similar symptoms.

Sounds like a yet unidentified environmental toxin to me. That’s how Shoemaker’s CIRS work started. It didn’t start with mold. I wonder what would happen if these people were to be treated with the Shoemaker protocol.

i have read a bit about
it - it seems the two main candidates are a Prion(like CJD) but something new - or an as yet unidentified biotoxin.
but it could be something bacterial or viral - some of the test for long lived bacterial infections are pretty poor - and they have only had a handful of cases to work with - so could be under the radar

I would suspect a chemical exposure problem first. I think if it was tick related it would have showed up other places in the same manner. Although it has to start somewhere. I suspect they could test the people for tick illnesses though and many would test positive.
Every deer tick I have found on my property in Maine had borrelia. I used to mail them in to the local university it was $5 I mailed in probably a dozen. I stopped about
5 years ago after they raised the price to $15.
