I don't really see the point he's trying to make in his first speech.

He's criticizing US Healthcare but he doesn't provide what he thinks is a solution.

As far as I'm aware, he charges $800 for his first consult without accepting insurance.

It's kind of like he's arguing against himself.

Sure you can submit the bill yourself to your insurance, but good luck with that when it's about Lyme.

And sure, US Healthcare isn't perfect, but at least it allows for LLMD's to even partially exist.

Having lived in many other countries, it's a complete nightmare in other countries to even get someone to believe in Lyme outside of the US in my experience.

Most of the other countries I've lived in don't even have LLMD's because it's not a part of the government-run healthcare system (as most governments don't believe in chronic Lyme).

Yes, it’s likely $800 now for the first appointment - which is about 3 hours long. Is that really out of line with other llmds?
My previous LLND charged me $180 for an appt that was 30-45 mins long.
I don’t know how the healthcare/insurance works in the US - if they don’t cover lyme treatment - then how does a Dr (eg Dr J) accept the patients insurance?

We don’t have many llmds here in my province. I believe there is one in the province Ontario and one in Alberta.

We do have some LLND’s though and here in BC they can prescribe most pharmaceuticals (not Mepron tho).

I understand what you're saying.
To be honest, I don't have all the solutions either.

The only point I was trying to make is that it's easy to say that a system is broken, without offering a solution and then benefiting from that system yourself.

I am aware it's a 3 hour appointment but when a Lyme patient has been sick for many years, can't work, possibly divorced, broke, and struggling to pay the bills, then $800 isn't a possibility for many.

From what I've heard from other patients, he doesn't offer anything less than 3 hours for the first session. Which makes me wonder, if the system is so broken, why not start with yourself and offer a limited 1 hour session for less?

Sure 1 hour might not be ideal, but it's better than not offering an appointment at all to sick patients.

I mean I'm sure he has his reasons to charge that, and they might be valid I don't know, but if you don't offer a solution you shouldn't be on stage saying how bad it all is. I mean he takes a part it in.

Just my 2 cents.

So I think he lets you start with his np’s if you need a cheaper appointment not sure how much they are. And you’re right it’s easy to complain about a system and not have a solution, but hey admitting there’s a problem is a first step to a solution. Most people I know won’t admit there’s a problem. A lot of them want to go to gov’t run insurance which like you both said would make the problem worse for Lyme patients.

Girlie the way private insurance works is sometimes your plan will cover out of network providers so you can file a claim with a receipt to get coverage under their out of network policy. Most llmd offices still want to know your insurance because even though insurance won’t pay for their services, they will pay for things they order such as prescription meds snd lab tests etc.

I don’t have a solution either but what’s going on is bad. Although like you both pointed out it’s worse in other countries.

Good video to show, Girlie. If more people talked about the problem and made it the issue it really is, maybe we could get something done. Every May, my banner of Facebook shows it's Lyme Disease Awareness Month. It's surprising how many people know someone dealing with it.

I understand Rainy Cloud's point. But her point about the view of Lyme outside the United States at least tells us here we have SOMENONE to try and treat it. But I also get the part about cost. There are so many who can't afford to get the needed help.

But if more doctors would bring this to the forefront and make presentations like Dr. J, at least their would be more hope to deal with this complete disgrace of the medical community. After 45 years or so of it, you wonder if that day will ever come. So we have each other.

An hour wouldn’t be long enough.
You get an extensive physical exam - then a series of questions where you rate yourself on 1-10 and then your partner/friend also rates you.

Eg “How is your cognitive ability” with 1 being bad and 10 being
good.
On that question I think I rated myself a 4 and my husband said 1.
The NP lightly scolded him and said a 1 would be pretty much non functional… lol.

I don’t think it would be right for him to do a lesser assessment for a lower price - if he uses it to clinically diagnose and evaluate his patients.

So what could Dr J do about that - If insurance companies won’t accept it - than how does he work with it?
Are you saying if DrJ would take insurance - they would accept it?

I believe Doctors can have practices outside of the healthcare system but then the patient has to pay out of their pocket which most can’t afford
