I never had a doctor or naturopath test for EBV until a little over three years ago. The results and interpretations by doctors can be confusing.
As Garize mentioned, a compromised immune system with Lyme leaves one open to EBV or reactivated, since it is said 90% of the population has EBV in their body but it has been kept in check until something allows it back out.
The tests are an anti-body panel, and that is where understanding results can get confusing. And now a lot of doctors depend on a EBV DNA blood test as the best way to see if EBV is active. My antibody panel has shown, for three years, EBV has been active, yet all the EBV DNA tests have been negative.
Symptoms can be numerous - deep fatigue, sore throat, fever, headaches, swollen lymph nodes, swollen spleen. Also, every bit of information I have seen mentions a high white blood count comes with EBV or reactivated EBV, though a couple on this site have said it can also include a low white blood count. A high leukocyte percentage can also be an indicator, though high white blood cells and leukocyte percentage can also be caused by many other things.
It's never hurts to have it tested. If your EBV IgM is normal, there is a good chance EBV is not active. Mine has been high, along with the other antibodies, as long as I've been testing, which is odd.
