I was just on Buhner’s website and discovered he published a new article on 10/16/21.

I haven’t read it yet, but this should be informative and helpful for anyone with mitochondrial dysfunction (most of us)

Thank you WBF, I didn't know you could inhale melatonin.
It's a very useful supplement for me, not just for sleep.
Sometimes I wish it didn't make me sleepy actually, because it has so many other benefits.

Interestingly. Almost all of the things in that protocol are also suggested for lyme in his last book.

Melatonin is also interesting.

I have incorporated it into my nigh-time stack of things to help improve my sleep but only at 1mg per night.

I see its numerous anti inflammatory and antimicrobial effects are typically at much higher doses.

But i have been wary of these because i had read accounts of this causing serious ling term issues with sleep disturbance and other issues.

Would be interested if anyone knows more about that.

I take a low-dose (0.3 mg) extended-release dose for sleep. Even a 1.0 mg tablet gives me a hangover effect.

The person from whom I derived that dosage is Richard J. Wurtman, MD. If you Google his name, perhaps you will find something of interest in his investigations into melatonin.

I take 5mg, it helps tremendously with nightmares during treatment.

I also looked into melatonin last night, a couple things that were stated were that:

- It can decrease REM sleep, which could be a problem.
- The body doesn't permanently adjust to taking melatonin, meaning that if you quit, the body will keep producing it's own.

So I guess a negative and a positive.

Also noticed a lot of people prefer lower doses, that hasn't been my own experience, but I do understand how that might work.

However, there were very few studies provided where I read all of this. So I will look into it more today.

I take 0.25 mg melatonin very occasionally when I can't get back to sleep in the middle of the night. If I take any more than that, then I feel a hangover the next day. Even that dose gives me nightmares sometimes.

I have read so many times about the impressively positive effects of melatonin supplementation, but I can't imagine being able to take the doses being recommended, or anything close to them. Is it something people work up to? I assume that bodies might make varying amounts of their own melatonin, or related hormones, or might metabolize them differently.... So it might not be an option for everyone.

I tried taking my tiny melatonin dose every night at bedtime early in the pandemic because of Buhner's advocacy for taking it to prevent and treat COVID, but I could not handle it, unfortunately. I decided that I'd take it if I ever were to contract COVID, but not otherwise for any length of time.
