i just wanted to report back on my experiments with this Cumin seed for PEM / Fatigue
i did have Covid again - or a similar respiratory virus - while i was trailing this the first time around - and stopped to try and sort out what was going on.
but there had been some encouraging signs so i wanted to give it a fair trial and so as the virus was pretty much gone i started 1 level 5ml scoop of fresh ground cumin seed each day with lunch - starting around 5 days ago.
similar to what i thought was happening the first time around, before my experiment was interrupted
i have this time experienced a useful step up in energy - that i mainly notice while walking
in that my walking speed stepped up to the best it has been since getting ill and stayed there for 4 days on the trot now.
i walk for around 3-4 miles each day on a set course, walk as fast as i can and time myself - and i find that the time the course takes is noticeably faster on the good days - and slower on the not so good days - no matter how hard i try.
it is not uncommon to have one day where my walk is fast - but 4 days at the fastest ever pace has not happened before - so i do think this is doing something
i also notice a slight increase in sleep duration and quality - not quite as clear an effect as with the walking pace - but something there - and anything that helps sleep is very welcome for me as its been disrupted for ages and i have been working at getting it better for around 2-3years now. even small improvements in my sleep tend to translate to better days - and i think help recovery in the long term
i have been unable to workout for the last 2 weeks due to this weird virus - and then a weird shoulder injury - but that seems to be clearing now so will get back to it with a few 80% style workouts to ease back in - and will note if there is any detectable benefits there also - either in output or recovery ( currently my workouts are around 45mins and out e on the verge of PEM) .
i haven't had a severe PEM type event for a long while - i do have slowed down days that often follow a day where i have been extra busy - or if i've done some driving - eg to visit relatives - so will look out for that and report back.
my guess after reading some of the scientific papers on cumin seed constituents is that its blocking the inflammation pathway that bacterial antigens trigger in our immune cells - and its this reduction in inflammation that is leading to freer movement and better energy
IL-6 is the cytokine most often responsible for sleep problems - and it is triggered as a downstream effect of this same pathway - so that could explain the better sleep
although originally targeting CFS and PEM - there is a lot of crossover in symptoms with Lyme and co and CFS/ME ( and fibromyalgia ) - and many studies now link CFS to bacterial endotoxin levels in the blood - so if you feel you have symptoms from inflammation triggered by bacteria - including fatigue, PEM, myalgia, pain, sleep problems etc ( i think that's most people here ! ) i think it might be worth a try - the effect is modest - but its safe, inexpensive, easy to tolerate - and may even have useful effects in the long term - and in the end - every little helps.
overall I'm intrigued to continue and see if there are more benefits longer term
thanks to Loski for the heads up!
