17 year old son just had a random seizure

Friday April 1, 2022 my son had a seizure that lasted about a good 5 minutes or longer and I was scared to death and didnt know what to do. My sister and my nephew were here and they helped through it by calling ambulance and paramedics. A few weeks prior to this day he had been telling me that he was kind of feeling weird and that it would come in spurts but he would kind of blank out and have a sort of tightness or twitch in his hand or mouth and even driving he said he would blank out for about 15-20 seconds then come too but almost like having deja vu. So I typed everything he was telling me in google and it pulled up absence seizures so I made an appointment with his doctor. They asked if it was an emergency and I said not really because he was still functioning and going to school and they gym and etc. the appointment was about 2 weeks out. The day he had his seizure he stayed home from school and slept all day long and just was feeling not himself. I was at work and I got home and he got in the shower and then back to his room and laid back down. I just assumed he was extra tired from spring break and having a ton :of company etc. about seven thirty that night we were supposed to be getting ready for the movies and my nephew ran to my room and said I think he is having a seizure! I am still traumatized and its only been a few days. At the hospital they did the CT scan and some other tests and they all came back fine. The next day I got some more results back and the thing that stood out to me was his blood sugar being 165. My son is not a diabetic but it does run in the family. He used to be over weight but has recently lost 50 pounds. What I dont understand is that he had been sleeping all day and had no food or water and why would his sugar be that high and why did he have a seizure? I am so lost and confused and need some advice. We see his doctor in a few days. Thank you

Seizures can be a symptom of bartonella, and the adrenal stress from chronic infections (also Lyme disease, etc) can lead to hyperglycemia and diabetes. Long covid is also a risk factor for diabetes.

However, there are many things which can cause this, and without knowing more of his medical history I wouldn't jump to the conclusion that it's a chronic infection. That's one possibility, but there are other things that can cause seizures and diabetes.

I'm one that had seizures due to Lyme and other associated infections, and what you describe at first does sound like the absence seizures I had, and I also had other types of seizures also. I don't know if they would have been considered "true" seizures, as I was never evaluated - I couldn't find a doctor that would see me.

I agree with Quin, though. Unless your son has other symptoms/blood tests that show Lyme or other tick-borne infections, or you've seen a bulls-eye rash(like one of these: https://www.bayarealyme.org/blog/lyme-disease-bullseye-rash/), or other evidence of a chronic infection, that wouldn't be my first guess at what he may be dealing with either.

I did not get the bulls eye rash. I didn't initially suspect Lyme disease, but I was sick with something, and had blood tests done, which found low but detectable antibodies to borrelia burgdorferi.

Because of the weak hit on the antibody test, Lyme disease was considered a possibility, so antibiotic treatment was tried. This resulted in a rise in neutrophil count, seen on a CBC. That is a Jarisch-Herxheimer reaction, caused by the die-off of bacteria from the antibiotics and seemed to confirm the suspected diagnosis of Lyme disease.

My blood test did not initially find antibodies to bartonella, however did find low protein and increased bilirubin, which, along with skin rashes, was suggestive of bartonella. Repeated PCR testing did eventually get a hit for bartonella henselae DNA. This diagnosis was a bit frustrating because the initial round of testing was unable to find it.

The blood tests also found that I had increased levels of vitamin B6, which I didn't understand at the time, but is something that has been reported on this forum as being associated with bartonella infection. Additionally, some people report that bartonella produces a characteristic foul odor, which I also noticed.

So if you suspect borrelia or bartonella infection, perhaps this gives you some idea of what you might be looking for.

As for suspicion of long covid, the simplest approach seems to be to try a round of antivirals and see if the symptoms improve.
