I took 1 (625mg) pill a day last spring for about a week. Then had horrible lower back/kidney area pain. A few months later I tried 1 pill again and the next day similar pain. This pass week I tried taking a 1/4 pill a day lasted 3 days and now I can feel the pain starting. Trying to figure out if my kidneys can't handle it or if a binder could really cause this much pain if it's working like it should? I've taken cholestyramine and GI detox in the past with no issues.

Prior to trying the binder I've been off all meds for 5 months just a clean diet and mild exercise. A little relief from a few issues (chest inflammation/high heart rate) but has done nothing for my chemical sensitivity issues.

A few thoughts since no one has commented..

Welchol isn’t adding anything to the body so unless you’re reacting to something else in the welchol (idk if there’s purer compounded forms or not), or there’s always a chance for detox reactions with binders in sensitive people…

However a 1/4 of a pill is an extremely small dose. Like sensitive child size of a dose.

CSM has been shown to be less effective broad spectrum wise than initially thought.. welchol therefore even less so.. some people have gotten better from them though in mold cases 🤷‍♂️ Neil Nathan’s work found them to be effective for ochratoxin. My current ILADS doc says she never uses either anymore.

That’s interesting. If you took Cholestyramine without massive herxing, then it seems unlikely Welchol is causing issues due to toxins. However, what loski mentioned could be accurate. If you have a particular toxin that isn’t bound by Cholestyramine or GI Detox but is affected by Welchol, then it’s possible.

I didn’t take Welchol, but my mother did. She took it for a month and had 6 nose bleeds from it. She had never had nose bleeds before and never had it again after stopping Welchol.

Have you ever had abnormal kidney labs?

I got nose bleeds from disturbing bartonella and causing it to become active. I don't know if Welchol can do that, but bartonella is a general suspect for nose bleeds.

My mom doesn’t have Lyme or bartonella that we know of, but she was affected by mold.

Thanks for all the replies.

My kidney labs creatinine and bun are always at the upper limit and at times been over. Last fall when I took the 5 days of welchol they ended up pretty high 1.6 and 30 I think over 1.2 and 20 was the high range.

It's been a week now and still not back to baseline in my back so I'm going to talk to the Dr and try something else.

Loski01- does she recommend any binders now?

WBF- I know you had some relief from Tudca is that supposed to be hard on the kidneys?

TUDCA aids liver detox. I am not aware of effects on kidneys, but I don’t have kidney issues. Running wild is the resident kidney expert. He could probably help you determine if it is safe for kidneys.
