Doxycycline - Stomach Pain

I started doxycycline yesterday as a 2nd treatment for this sinus infection. Says take on empty stomach. Yesterday I took about 2 hours after eating and was fine. This morning I took on a completely empty stomach, and OUCH!! My stomach hurts. I ate a handful of pumpkin seeds after my stomach started hurting, but I think it was too late. Now I’m belching, too, and starting to feel bad.

How do you take doxy?

Headache and common cold and flu are among the highest reported. Common cold and flu - Huhh?????

Then there’s intracranial pressure, tooth staining, and the skin reactions I already was told about. I had photosensitive reaction to Voriconazole. Doc wasn’t sure if I would be at higher risk with that with doxy or not but said we would stop if I did.

Good Lord, why I am I doing this? It will be for at least 10 days AND it takes 5 days to clear the system after stopping.

I'm so sorry, WBF. Many here can take antibiotics just fine, but some of us really struggle or can't tolerate them at all! I have heard here several times that taking doxycycline with a little food is fine if it's the only way to tolerate them. Hang in there!

Doxycycline is anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive. This can increase your susceptibility to common infections, such as cold and flu. I also had this problem with minocycline.

How do you take doxy?

My Lyme doc said to take it with a bit of food. It is harsh on the stomach.
It may reduce its effectiveness a very minor amount.

Almost every antibiotic has a long list of side effects.
Here’s the side effects list for Ceftin (commonly prescribed antibiotic for Lyme and CO’s):

More common:

Chills
diarrhea
fever
general feeling of illness or discomfort
headache
itching of the vagina or genital area
pain during sexual intercourse
rigidity
sweating
thick, white vaginal discharge with no odor or with a mild odor
Less common

Black, tarry stools
chest pain
cough
loose stools
painful or difficult urination
shortness of breath
sore throat
sores, ulcers, or white spots on the lips or in the mouth
swollen glands
unusual bleeding or bruising
unusual tiredness or weakness

Me mentioning diabetes meds brings back a horrible time - when my elderly father (in the hospital at the time) was given fast acting insulin without anything to eat - his blood sugars went so low he went into a coma.
The hospital didn’t even call me.
I happened to visit him the next morning and he was just coming out of it.
He was never the same (cognitively) after that.

1) it should never have happened.
2) The hospital should have called me when it happened.
3) I should have sued - as he had to go to a care home for the remaining days of his life.
There was a cost because the care homes were at full capacity and we had to pay a lot for a private care home
( thousands ) until a government care facility had an opening.
