Why is Babesia not killed by artemisinin like Plasmodium?

although most still use some artemisinin derivative in their Babesia combinations

i guess its worth noting that the study focusses on one pathway - the one that is thought to be the reason for artemisinin's high effectiveness for plasmodium - but which means there could be others by which artemisinin / artemether could work in at least to some degree in Babesia - esp in combined with other anti-microbials.

for example - i read a study recently that found artemisinin actually had synergy with doxycycline for persister cells of lyme bacteria ( doxycycline on its own does not have good activity for lyme persisters ) - and artemisinin isn't normally recommended for lyme as lyme also doesn't use haem in the same way that plasmodium does. so its a little surprising.

in general, with multiple antibiotic combos - in patients with multiple infections - we often do not really know which antimicrobials are acting on which infections -
there will perhaps be a tendency by LLMD's etc to assign effect where the drugs have historically been targeted - eg artemisinin towards apicomplexans.
but it could be that they are working on other infections through lesser know pathways.

I have nothing to add that would help, but want to thank you both for the information provided. This is something I never thought about, and it helps to know as much as possible in different aspects of all the Lyme items.
