Dapsone for Bartonella

Good afternoon Everyone,

I have been treating bartonella aggressively since last November (from a tick bite 2 years ago). I am on methylene blue, bactrim, rifampin 1200 mg, and clarithromycin. Some symptoms have improved but I do still have some. I saw my doctor yesterday with the intention of asking to switch rifampin to rifabutin. She didn't love that idea and instead wants me to do dapsone. In a pulsed fashion of like 7 days on three weeks off or something.

Has anyone here with bartonella tried dapsone? Or anyone in general? It sounds scary to me, just looking for input on if this might help me.

it is regarded as a harsher older drug - but still is routinely used in developing countries at 100mg a day for leprosy and seems to be tolerated by most patients

some LLMD's use high dose folate supplements to try to offset some of its effect on anaemia - and methylene blue at around 50mg-100mg a day is often used to try to reduce damage to haemoglobin.

neither of these are typically given to leprosy patients though

its known to be pretty effective for lyme - as per papers by Horowitz
and it is active for bartonella also - it could even be its activity against bartonella that helps lyme patients recover - we do not know as yet

its not a bad choice if tolerated

note its advisable to be tested for G6PD status (glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase) prior to taking it - as its contradicted in persons with this mutation ( anaemia is likely to be much more of an issue)
