First dose of Relpax

I just had my first dose of Relpax after being on Topamax since January 2011. A google search showed me this drug is normally used once a migraine has started but it was prescribed to me as a preventative,
has anyone heard of it being used this way? Can it work this way? I'm going cold turkey off the Topamax but in the future might have to go back on it and take it with the Replax, it depends how well the Replax works on its own.

I'm interested in hearing other migraine sufferers thoughts on Replax.

How was it prescribed dosage wise as a preventative? I would imagine the cost would be very high depending on how it is used. I also thought you had to wean off topamax due to the risk of seizure when going off cold turkey.

The drug comes in a pack of only 4 tablets which is a bit odd and my script is for one repeat only so I can see me visiting my dr quite often to get more. I was told to have one pill 30 mins before I need it ( see my other thread) and to have another pill after 2 hours if I need it. I didn't know until I googled it that the drug isn't meant to be taken every day, hmmm.

The Relpax cost me $21 for 4 tablets so yes it's exy but if it works it's worth it.

It's 48 hours since my last dose of Topamax and I've had no problems at all, going cold turkey seems to be working fine.

Well I have not used Relpax although I have some samples. I have used Imitrex once and Maxalt is the triptan I prefer. For me however, I have used it only as abortive and it usually takes about 2 hours to work. Still a Godsend for me. Your headaches are orgasm induced if I have read correctly so it takes a little planning on your part. The expense will depend on your sex life I guess, for me I was having about 3 to 4 migraines a week that evolved into daily which is why I am on the topamax now. Does the Relpax work when you take it before the headache starts? I have tried Maxalt for my migraines with aura and found it to be less effective for those because it takes so long to work. I usually know about 30 minutes before I get the headache because of the aura. I take 800 mg of Motrin at that time and although I still get a headache it is not as severe as if I wait until after it starts. Good luck with finding something that works for you. Sometimes it is like a giant science experiment.

Yes I am happy to say the Relpax worked the one time I took it, it was like orgasm was before all this migraine and pressure build-up in my head ever started and that was a really weird experience. I had actually forgotten just how good pain-free sex can be. But it's early days yet, I can't think of Relpax as my miracle drug just yet as I've tried other drugs that worked at first but then didn't. I have my fingers crossed though. I have an appointment to see my dr tomorrow to let her know how I got on with the Relpax, how embarrassing lol.

I have used Maxalt for about 9 years now and it still works for me. I hope you'll have good luck with the Relpax. Fingers crossed for you. I know there are women that use one of the triptans as a preventative for menstrual migraine during that portion of the month. I used to have to take it daily one week out of the month as an abortive sometime and then just go on about my day. It worked for me.
