I have a friend with M.S.  I am curious if you know what percentage of M.S. sufferers also have lyme disease or what exactly the statistical relationship is?  Thank you in advance.   bablymers  mom

Hi bablymers,

 

    I've never actually talked to anyone who has both illnesses at the same time, but it is possible to have more than one issue going on at once.   There's never been anything done on a wide scale, to my knowledge, to show statistics to what you are asking about. There has been some small studies done to see if people with MS actually have lyme instead and those studies say its only a very small percentage of people.  There's a lot of controversy between MS and Lyme but anyone going through testing for MS should consider any of the other possible mimicers of the illness including Lyme's disease.

I also agree with Kimber and Shellypoo. There isn't any study that i'm aware of to indicate the percentages of folks with both illnesses. Lyme is indeed an MS mimic and should be included in any tests performed on u'r friend. We have a lyme forum here on HealingWell and they can help direct u'r next best actions. Thank you for your replies.   Kimber, the small study you referenced-- do you know the percentage that actually had lyme instead of M.S.?    Rhonda, thank you for the lyme forum suggestion---I participate in it and that is how I became aware of the other resources available here!  Also, love your line about our Lord!  Shellypoo, thank you for answering me and for wishing my friend well.  I hope for good health for all of us!   bablymers mom

I am in that group you are asking about.  Dx with MS 7 yrs ago and lyme 1 1/2 yrs ago.  Lyme mimics MS in many ways.

The study I was referencing to was the one that Uppity posted a link for, however direct links to that site don't work for some reason.  If you go to www.nmss.org and do a search for MS vs Lyme you can easily find the link and look for yourself.  There are other similar studies too but most are done on 100 people or less.  The percentages seem to be in the 1 to 3% range depending on the study you look at.  Hope this helps.
