Like you I was really not looking forward to having a catheter when I was having surgery (I am sure you will have to have one--you usually do need one during any major surgery) BUT they will put it in while you are asleep and you will not even know it or feel a thing!! :)
When you wake up with it in, it really is not that bad--annoying, but not painful. When they remove it, it only takes a second and is uncomfortable for only that second.
Don't worry I am sure you can definitely handle it. Mine was removed 3 days after my ileostomy...it was annoying to have to walk to the bathroom with the line dangling between my legs and the IV line getting in the way when I had to empty my bag, but it is only for a short time.
