Simple Drain - Clogged?

Hi there, my hubby has a simple drain on one side of his stomach and a JP drain on the other side of his stomach from his J-pouch surgery.  I am supposed to flush the drain daily and I didn't get to do it yesterday because I was out of saline seringes.  I was doing it today and the saline actually started leaking out of the hole where the tube is coming out of his stomach.  I stopped putting the saline in and then reattached the drain and usually it starts flowing into the container but it didn't do anything.  I changed the dressing on the hole opening but I'm wondering if the drain is clogged or something?  Should I be concerned?

I am on the east coast in the middle of the hurricane right now...so all the doctor's offices are closed and such.   Thanks in advance. :)

I wouldn't be worried about the fluid coming out the incision area... I had a ton of fluids gushing from my JP drain incision right before and after I was discharged, and nurses/doctors said it was fine.. just fluids needing to get out so I made sure to change the bandage frequently.

If the drain continues not filling up/draining there may be a clog. I'm not sure how a JP drain differs from a simple one, but did they teach you how to "strip" the JP drain tubing? It keeps the tubing free from clogs - not sure if that's something you can do with a simple drain or not. If it's not draining properly, most likely he will start feeling bloated and uncomfortable within a couple hours, and that will let you know for sure. Sometimes getting up and walking can help get things moving... mine used to have trouble draining sometimes, but then stripping and then walking would usually get it going again. A heating pad can also help relieve discomfort if he gets any as well as encourage things to drain. If that doesn't seem to help then give a call to his ostomy nurse if/when you can.
