Some people learn to fart, others don't seem to have the ability. I do not have the ability to fart without leaking so I only pass gas when I'm on the toilet. Honestly, it is rare that it causes a problem for me. In the first few months if I ate something that made me especially gassy, like beans or a lot of soda, I would probably have an extra bathroom trip, but nowadays I rarely notice it. Sometimes I feel a bit of pressure like there is gas that wants to come out, but if I wait a few seconds it sort of "shifts" and the feeling goes away. It is NOT like walking around all day needing to fart! At least, not for me.
Other people are able to fart without leaking, but I can't comment on that because it just doesn't work for me. Of all the inconveniences of surgery, this one really doesn't bother me. The nice thing about having some gas to release every time I go to the bathroom is that my BMs are faster, because the gas pushes everything out.
