Can I go see your surgeon? My surgeon told me he would HOPE to have to only go in through the anus to remove it, however, he doesn't know what he would find and may have to go into my original incision. UGH. Maybe, since he wasn't the one who did my operation? I still believe I have a recto vaginal fistula hidden up there under the cuff because I bleed from my vagina from time to time, especially after he scopes inside my anus! No blood comes from the anus, just the vagina! This puzzles not only him, but my gyn doctors too. I have been through myriad of tests, CT scans, MRI's, transvaginal ultrasounds and they still cannot find out what is causing this bleeding. I have to add, I also have mucus, which, too, come out the vagina and NOT the anus..go figure.

Well, I have an appointment with my gyn this Wednesday. She is the one who told me it wasn't necessary to do a D & C three years ago. Since I still have this ongoing problem, maybe it is about time something is done about it. I just hope it isn't anything serious. I would think, though, if it were something serious or life threatening, I would be in much worse shape. I'm in no pain. My original colorectal surgeon told me that things do get jumbled around in there during the colectomy, so, hoping that is the case.

I'm in New Jersey. I had my surgery over at Pennsylvania Hospital in Philly. The doctor I had was head of colorectal surgery at Penn and trained at the Cleveland Clinic. He was in practice for over 30 yrs and had a top notch overall review. That is why I chose him. I really shouldn't complain. He did an awesome job. His opinion, much like your surgeon, was there are more complications when the anus is removed. Also, I had started to bleed on the table and guess he wanted to wrap things up ASAP. He also did a fantastic job on the stoma.

Saw my gyn yesterday and she went over all the reports from my tests, CT scans, MRI's, another test which name escapes me, but they injected a dye into my vagina to see if it came out the anus (and it didn't) so still could not find the fistula. She thought, like I still do, I may have a tiny fistula under the rectal cuff. However, since I don't use my rectum for defecating (sorry TMI?) she said to leave well enough alone. I love this GYN doctor...she has never been a pill pusher and she is a non alarmist. Her motto, if it ain't broke, don't fix it, she is very thorough but avoids any unnecessary tests and meds.
