Fist time to the beach with an ostomy

Going to the Jersey shore for Memorial day week. Was hoping to get some tips on preparing for the beach and tackling emergency leaks ect.

I normally wear a two piece Colopast SenSure Mio..it stays together with a sticky seal and Brava protective seal. I think a one piece may be better. Also I'm afraid all this goop seal, rings, paste, ect may melt in the sun or become unsecured due to sweat or sea water.

Does anyone use stoma caps? Not sure how these would workbut they are discreet

Hoping to order some supplies in a few days but will like to get some input first.

Definitely look into getting some "Sure-Seals."

Sure-Seals are an adaptic dressing that you apply over the entire flange. It looks like clear kitchen Glad-Wrap® or TegaDerm®. Sure-Seals are the absolute best for securing a wafer when you want to engage in water sports. I have a friend with an end ileostomy who participates on a Master's swimming team (she is often in the water for hours during a weekend swim meet). She uses Sure-Seals and highly advocates them.

Oh I adore the jersey shore!! We go every summer.

Last summer was my first trip to the beach with my ostomy, I also wear the Mio 2 piece with adhesive coupling. I found this appliance to be great for the beach because the wafer has no tape as is already waterproof on its own. The only thing extra I used were the Brava strips for a little more security.

I packed so many bags because I thought with the beach I would be changing everyday. I only changed once on vacation and then again the day we got home and that was over 7 days! Besides the strips I didn't find I needed anything extra.

I wore a tankini and the bag was very discreet. We pack up in the morning and spend all day at the beach. I had no issues in the sun or heat. Although we do usually setup a beach umbrella bc I'm not a huge sunbather but was in the ocean each day.

Have fun! I'm jealous I still have 3 months until my trip!

I went to the beach and I wore a hollister snap together. I wore a high waist bikini - thankfully high waists are in style. The front is ruched so you couldn't notice anything under, and the mini pouch also helps with that. I popped the mini on before I left for the beach and swapped a normal pouch on when I returned home. I always carried ziplocks for tossing used pouches. The minis are neat, but I would never wear one on the regular because it's just too much emptying and the shorter bag makes emptying more difficult.

I don't think stoma caps are normally used for ileos. There is too much output. i think it's more for people who have a kpouch/bcir, or a colostomy. I would imagine if you didn't eat anything and you KNEW 100% you wouldn't have any output, it would be okay for a short period, but if there is any output, it would need to be swapped.

Peace and Harmony: No issues with the beach, but just one observation...if you're going to bake in the sun, cover your stoma with more than just the bathing suit...a book or something else that is solid and keeps the heat/ultraviolet rays off the stoma. Other than that, have a blast!!! turn

HYDRATED is the key word. Stay away from alcoholic drinks while on the beach as they tend to dehydrate you. Take it from one who has been there, done that. A lesson well learned. Other than that, have fun. Sorry we won't be down that area over Memorial Day, it would have been nice to meet up after all these years.

Great advice everyone! I feel more confident now. I'm thinking of packing some extra bags in a zip lock in the cooler just to make sure the adhesive doesn't melt...especially the brava modable rings. They can gt a bit soft.

Now to try on the dreaded swimsuit. Been under pressure at work and gain weight...ugh!
