I had a mango this afternoon and its the first time I've had one since my ileostomy surgery and now I think I may have a partial blockage happening, my stoma is really hurting and the mango is coming through in big stringy clumps, I am having to massage around my stoma almost constantly to ease the pain and help get the mango out. Is mango's normally a problem for us ostomates? Either way I think its best if I avoid it in the future even though I really love mango's. I am also drinking as much as I can. Is there anything else I can do to help get it out fast and prevent a major blockage from happening. I did just have adhesion surgery a week ago too so perhaps its anything that I eat right now could be a problem for me. . Its really hurting and I live alone so I'm extra afraid of something going wrong and no one here to help me. Thanks for taking the time to read this and help me

If you just had an adhesion surgery a week ago, your intestines are probably still swollen.
For the first six weeks after my surgery eating lots of things caused issues. After about 8 weeks I was able to start eating normally again.
Just keep drinking water or grape juice and massaging. Hot bath works too or putting something hot around the stoma works.

I aways eat a cracker, piece of bread, something with fruit it works better. If you have cramps and a feeling of something wrong, first try getting on hands/elbows and knees with your tummy hanging down - I just do that on the bed -looks funny but somehow that helps.

Lots of fluids, no solid foods, heat, massage and get into the postition that woozie is describing. I have had many paritial blockages and three obstructions from food, mainly fruit. If you have very little out of the ostomy and increase in pain go into the ER

Thanks for your replies :-) it finally cleared earlly hours of the morning so needless to say I am exhausted today and will be in bed nice and early tonight. As much as I love mango's I will never touch one again, its just so not worth it. Guess its all a learning experience as to what we can or can't eat. Take care

A food blockage means literally that. Some people are lucky enough to have never have even one but then again, I know some people who have had several. Some bits of food have become stuck in your small intestine and are unable to make their way down through the intestine and out into your bag. Signs that you may have a blockage include: watery stools, fever and/or nausea, pain and/or cramps in the stomach area, your ileostomy has stopped working or it could work almost continuously.

Some home-remedies include: Relax (if you can through the pain!) - if you can tolerate wine, have a glass - it helps relax the intestinal muscles, massage your stomach, take a hot bath or shower - this will also help relax the muscles, take a dose of Milk of Magnesia, drink some hot tea. Some people find it beneficial to go down on all fours and position your self so that your bottom is stuck up in the air (an undignified position but apparently it does work ).

If none of the above work, then seek medical attention. Go to the doctor or to the ER department. A food blockage can become serious if left untreated.

Just because it's caused you problems now doesn't mean it will cause you problems forever. Try it again a few months down the track (esp if you love it). Just remember to CHEW, CHEW, CHEW!
