Are pred- dependent cronies likely to be pred dependent if colon removed?

I am dx'd with pancolitis UC for years with no real signs of crohns, but my plan for jpouch surgery has been put on ice for the time being, due to a confusing case of recent colonoscopy biopsies showing no active inflammation in the colon, but active ileitis. (I am hoping this is just backwash ileitis but the results are not all that consistent with that.) I am trying to clarify what this all means but worst case, if this is crohns after all, wouldn't colon removal likely result in med dependence for crohns afterwards, minus the colon, ie lose your cake and don't eat it either?

Not sure what to say.....these two diseases are easily confused, even to the trained eye....also, not sure what your situation is, or if you've ever had a second opinion (with all the tests done all over again) to verify the UC diagnosis?

It's kind of funny, i was on prednisone for 7 years straight, and off and on for 8 years before that..on my last colonoscopy (getting ready for surgery), my surgeon said he didn't see much inflammation in the colon....lots of large polyps, but no inflammation..directly oppositte of my previous colonoscopies which showed inflammation....it didn't matter..colon was removed 3 months later...i was finally weened off of prednisone by Jan. 2012.

Give the Dr.'s some time and they can determine why the inflammation in the small intestines..i've read where sometimes the inflammation from the colon sometimes migrate to the small intestines in UC...but, ends after pred and/or surgery.

Thanks, Enigmawrap. I have had multiple opinions. My UC dx has been fairly solid with some qualifications. The most consistent thing pointing to UC is that there has never been any patchiness in the inflammation. As for the ileitis, that was not detected by my local pathologists who did hiwever see universal mild inflammation in the colon; but a second opinion by Mayo on the same biopsies saw active ileitis but only inactive pancolitis in the colon. Now I am in het another flare and woukd love to schedule jpouch surgery asap but I want to get at the bottom of this mess. I was encouraged to see papers on pubmed saying that backwash ileitis has no correlation to complications/lackof long term success for jpouch surgery... But can inactive colitis cause backwash? Confusing, but will keep trying to get to the bottom of this asap.
