Ileostomy or Colostomy? Anyone experience both?

Hello all,

I was just wondering has anyone had both a colostomy and ileostomy. Not at the same time, just at one point or another.

After my scope today, doc wants to take my rectum shocked needless to say i'm freaked out. Don't know what that would look like, heal like, feel like etc.

But outside of that , he said that feels that the colostomy would be "easier on me" than my current ileostomy. I don't know what that means. I was wondering if anyone found the colostomy "easier" and what that means for you?

What's the difference besides more formed stools? Any help would be greatly appreciated

Hi E Mom,

I have crohns...just yesterday was told crohns/colitis. I havent heard that term ever since i was diagnosed in 96. I have a temp ileo (for 5 years)

Was symptomless until a month or so ago i developed pyoderma gangrenosum, which when diagnosed, determined my crohns was out of wack and my ileo was the reason I wasn't feeling the symptoms

I have had both. Colostomy x2 and one illestomy. My temporary illestomy was a terrible experience due to a recessed stoma. Lots of burning of the skin and leaks. I found that my second and permanent colostomy was much better that both of the previous. Mainly because I asked my Doctor if I ever had to have another colostomy to make the stoma long enough to drain into my pouch. He did so and that was in 2009 and a much better experience. Hope yours will be as good solution as it was for me given the circumstances.

I had my rectum removed when I had my ileostomy done. I have Crohns and has severe rectal involvment. Honestly it was the hardest part of the surgery for me, it was very painful especially since they left the wound open to heal from the inside and it took 6 months to close. 13 years later I still cannot sit a long time and if it is bouncy or anything in the car my bottom hurts
