so because i'm mentally lazy and find it too easy to wind up at homedepot.com or fixnyerklunker.org whilst searching something important (boring), i had some gender questions maybe y'all might wanna take a poke at :

who gets uc more

who goes for the knife more

who needs the knife more but is too darn stubborn to get it (i think i have a clue on this one)

who talks about it more when they do get the bag/pouch (ya, this one too)

seriously, just wondering what the statistics are men vs women -

I'm not sure if you are looking for our opinions, or personal stats on this, so I'll give both.

I am a female. I had UC. I DID go for the knife and was not stubborn about it one bit. I am very open in talking about my ileostomy.

As far as which gender get UC more, I'd say it's pretty even. I think women are more apt to go for the knife, men more stubborn, women more chatty about it afterwards.

Yes, do you want actual stats or opinions? Stats, I dunno any offhand, but hit pubmed for long enough and you should come up with some.

If you just want my opinion (who doesn't? :p), then I reckon women are in the preponderance for numbers 1, 2 and 4, and men for number 3.

Also, just a minor niggle, but folks with Crohn's can have colectomies too....

You know, I'm actually surprised women like to talk about the bag and this disease in general.

Women, to my knowledge are very "reserved', they don't want to talk about "icky" stuff, or going to the bathroom...

One just told me that she got offended when another woman took a crap in the bathroom while she was in brushing her teeth. Like, omg, couldn't she wait till I'm done brushing my teeth.

The women that do talk about bags, colostomies are the ones that have no choice to talk about it.

As for men, I think they are more liberal talking about crap and stuff....I dunno my opinion.

Another woman was asking me what kinda of illness I had, when I started to explain, she went like.. ewwww ok, I don't want to know..

I don't think you can really generalize this sort of thing based on gender. Some women are reserved about "icky" personal stuff, and so are some men. My female friends have been much more open as far as discussing all the details of my disease and the aftermath of the surgery. Also, even though I had UC, and now have an ileostomy, doesn't mean I have no choice but to talk about it. I could choose to stay very private, not giving people any details or wanting to discuss it all, but I choose TO talk about it. Especially as far as the ileostomy goes, I don't see any point in trying to hide, or being ashamed of, the thing that pretty much saved my life.

well thank you all participants ! a big part of my inquiring mind had to do with the number of m vs w on this forum - since gender is not always known, i can't say for sure, but it seems to me that there are way more womens than mens - but that could be attributed to other factors such as employment and lack of computer skills -

sorry, didn't mean to leave out any ethnic groups ncot :-)

I genuinely can't remember a time when I was squeamish about bowel movements. It's perfectly possible I was pre-Crohn's; I just don't remember it <_<.

Now there is literally no such thing as TMI. Well, perhaps photos or videos in full HD, but I couldn't imagine anything I read being too much TMI.

@soystud - There are always more women than men on health forums. I think one reason is that men tend to sweep anything health-related under the carpet, at least more than women do. They just don't seem to like talking about their health. Obviously, I'm generalising and there are exceptions to the rule (hi dad!). But for a lot of men it's true. So even when a disease is roughly evenly split between the sexes, you'll still get more women joining forums to post about it than men.

I think you are right on there..guys tend to sweep it all under the rug for medical stuff, while women are pretty open about it.

But for me, 42 year old female, wasn't really diagnosed with IBD, or Crhon's, but had what was termed as {Chronic constipation, which resulted in mega colon and large intestine dying}

And yup, there really is not TMI these days..even when going for tests and stuff. I went for my MRI, and at first I didn't take off my bra, so the tech did a couple of things, came in and said, "Sorry, yeah, I need the bra off to..I'll step out".. I was like, "No need," reached behind my back, unhooked it and yanked it out my shirt sleeve (and I am BIG chested woman)..all modesty GONE :) lol...
