Loop ileostomy to permanent ileostomy

Hi everyone. I have a loop ileostomy currently. I have had it since 2011. I'm getting ready to have it made permanent. Does anyone have any advice for me of what to expect? I was also wanting to know if anyone has had this type of surgery did their stoma stay as original? I'm nervous about it changing because I'm happy with my current one. Other question does anyone have a good supplier for Convatec Ostomy supplies? I had liberator and wasn't happy with customer service.

I look for any assistance anyone can give me.

Wow thats a long time with a loop. I had a loop for a few months from a resection, then had a reversal that failed, and 10 weeks later had surgery for a permanent ileo. For me my end isnt much different from my loop but I had a very well behaving loop. It looksthe same and I am using the same pouch I did before. I loved life with my loop, I was also nervous it wouldn't be the same.

Are you having your colon and rectum removed? I think the pain and recovery was the only difference for me. I recovered quickly from the loop. This time I had my colon and rectum removed and recovery took a little longer and I had a little more pain.

I use some Convatec supplies and order from Edgepark. I have only been using them since October but have been happy so far. No issues. Good luck with your surgery.

I'm glad you asked this question (hopefully there are some people in here who have experienced the same and can shed some wisdom). I have had my temp loop ileo since since 2013, and am thinking that at some point in my future I will need to change to permanent ileo. My loop ileo is working fine, even though it takes some work keeping up with the nutritional and dehydration issues. I too am so scared about changing it. I am fearful of another surgery and all that could go wrong. Can you share the reason that you are changing your temp for a permanent? I am wondering if we share the same medical issues? I had rectal cancer and was reconnected with the intent of reversal, but I am terrified to go down that road. So now I still have my remaining rectum and colon in me that is not active, but I have great difficulty with colonoscopies to check for any new polyps or signs of the cancer returning.

As to your question about a supplier, I use Byram Healthcare and have had no problems.

I had my loop for about a yr then went to a permanent ostomy. I was worried about that too, my loop was easy to manage. I did have problems with hydration and still do but it's better with the end ileo. They brought mine up thru the same opening and it's actually better than the loop for shape. I had to cut my wafer to an oval before and now I don't. Makes change day easier, faster. My surgeon told me they don't always have to change the stoma it just depends when they get in there. But they redid mine. I also use Convetec and I get six days wear time consistently. They put me in that fr the start. Tried Hollister but couldn't get good wear time. I've used Mountain view medical in Colorado. Better pricing than edge park but they don't bill ins so u have to submit it yourself. My ins changed and they're not in network now so not covered. Now I'm using McKesson and they do fine. Also have used Byram health and they were ok. Hope your surgery goes well :)
