I do not know what problems you are having with your bladder. I am female, but I think it is common for both male and female to have problems with bladder following ileostomy surgery. Sometimes the meds used during surgery can cause you to not be able to urinate. Having a indwelling catheter puts you at risk for UTI's, and if the sheath catheter is the same as the condom catheter, I know those do not stay on very well, and cause leaking. I have worked in a hospital as a nurses assistant for years, and no matter how much adhesive, or what size the condom catheter was, we never had one stay on very well, and repeatedly had to replace them, which is uncomfortable for the patient. Depending on your problems, as to why you are having an ileostomy, can also cause bladder issues, if you have alot of inflammation. I have been diagnosed with Interstitial Cystitis. Which as i have read, can be common with people with Inflammatory Bowel Disease. I have Ulcerative Colitis. I have very bad bladder pain, and bladder spasms, and at times, I cannot urinate. I have problems completely emptying my bladder, so I have frequent trips to the bathroom, and urgency. I recently had blood in my urine also, but no UTI was present. i have also talked with other ostomy patients that had diverticulitis, and had experienced purfuration of the bladder, from the diverticulitis. I also know that alot of ostomites, get UTI's, especially, women. Probably from feces getting in the wrong places. As far as any permanent effects from surgery, I dont know of any, and you should ask your primary Dr., or surgeon. I think for most people there is no bladder problems. I hope I helped you with your questions. Good luck to you.
