How much of his colon does your husband have left? The more he has, the more normal his BMs will end up becoming. People who have no colon left, but are connected to a j-pouch or a rectum will never have solid stools. They will range from anything from pure liquid to semi-formed, but completely formed is physically impossible. As long as there is no inflammation in the j-pouch or rectum, then there shouldn't be any long-term incontinence or extreme urgency. The first few weeks will be by far the worst and there may be accidents or night time leaks. It will take up to a year for the bowels to completely adjust, but the worst of it should be over after a few weeks.
Your husband doesn't have IBD, so that's a big plus in his favour. Most folks on this board who have problems after reversal are dealing with either Crohn's or pouchitis - your husband shouldn't get either of those because he never had IBD to begin with.
It sounds like he's been through the mill, though. I'm wishing you both luck and hope that the hernia can be fixed.
