I get red itchy irritated skin where the wafer sticks to the skin. I have had to visit the stoma nurse several times over it. This is what we have done that works for me....you will probably need to experiment.....
If I have just been really itchy under the wafer I use more barrier the next time I change.
If it is red, moist, or has any dampness I apply stoma powder to the impacted areas, dust off excess, apply skin barrier, and repeat....then I will put the wafer on. If it is really itchy and more severe then I might "crust" it very thinly 3 times. If the stoma powder doesn't help it I then apply just alittle bit of the stoma paste. The thought is to protect the skin alittle, let what is irritated heal and yet get your wafer to adhere.
My skin also develops allergies to the wafers so we switch them out. I have 3-4 different pouching systems with different wafer backings and I just rotate them every time I change. If I leave one on again when it is time to change I get skin issues. So I never use the same type of wafer two times in a row. I just switch out. 2 different types made it better, 3 made it much better...but that's just me.
And finally....we also had to play with the all the products I used....adhesive wipes, barrier, stoma powder, paste, eakin seals, and barriers. I can not use one stoma powder, one paste .... and have found only 2 barrier wipes and 1 adhesive remover that I can use.
Hope this helped....
