Hi,

Our first night home went well and we got some sleep. I took the advice of someone and hung his night bag on a 5 gallon bucket. Worked like a charm!  Randy said his penis twitches and keeps him awake.  Apparently it's not constant and even happens during the day, but it's not as noticeable as when he's trying to sleep.  It's more of an annoyance than anything, and there's no pain.  I assume it's because of the nerves being damaged.  I'll look at the bright side and hope it's the nerves trying to heal.  I believe nerves are a difficult thing to diagnose, sort of like a short circuit somewhere.  His surgery spared the nerves on the left side, and a partial on the right.

Anyone else experience this?  And if so.. does it go away eventually?

Hey... desert folks

It is healing time.  We all experienced twtching, aching, cramping, you name it, as our various parts began to heal.  It is hard to not react to every little thing, but I recommend that you try to ignore anything that isn't bleeding badly or extremely painful. Use common sense, but remember the body is healing and will feel like it never has before.  go ahead and ask questions here so you will be reassured, but remember it is probably just "normal" healing.

Any twitching is a good sign. Just take your time and let things heal. There will be plenty of time for "therapy" later on. I just hope you contenance returns. Hate to see anyone have to deal with what I am dealing with.

From my own experience of the odd sensations I had going on early in the recovery process, I'd say this is perfectly normal. Also, Randy has a catheter in and that will cause some movements that one would not expect without it.  And, too, all the body's healing mechanisms are working overtime to get things back to normal after the surgery.  That's a good sign.

Hi Guys,

Thanks for your replies we will look at this as a positive sign of his body healing.  Sorry to complain, I'm sure this seems rather trivial compared to some  more serious complaints.  It's bothering him enough that he can't sleep at night, and he dreads going to bed.  He's usually not a complainer, so I would imagine it's because he's had a rather tough week and right now just flat out doesn't feel so hot.  This is just one more thing that is "not normal" to him. He's still a newbie of only 5 days post-op.  If it's still a problem by Monday I'll put a call into the doc and see if he can safely take something to help him sleep at night. 

Taking one day at a time! yeah

Hey ~ Marie & Randy,   Your concern.... is not complaining…. Reaching out  ~  that’s what HealingWell is all about .   Your thread will help others who follow you.   So ~ don’t ever hesitate to reach out with any concerns or questions.   Randy needs sleep ~ It’s important that you contact your doctor and get him a mild sleep-aid.   We did and there is no doubt in our minds that this helped the healing process.   If you can contact your doctor now… do so… he doesn’t need 2 more nights without sleep.   S( He) could call in a prescript ion.   Mr. Hang (catheter) is a very important part of the healing process…. Make sure Randy is up and walking… this too is soooo important.   Sleep, eat, walk, sleep, eat, walk. Marie and Randy,
I don't recall any "twitching" per se, but I remember having spasms in that area. My Doc told me it was "bladder spasms" and that they should go away anywhere from a few days to a few weeks. Mine went away just before I had Mr. Hang removed. Mama Bluebird is right on (as always): call the Doctor and have a prescription phoned in. Sleep is essential! Glad the five gallon bucket trick worked for you - It sure helped me get around!
BTW, I'd give anything for a good twitch or two down there now!

Hi Mike and Bluebird,

I think you are right on about the bladder spasms. Everything is so close in proximity, maybe that's what is causing it. I would imagine that if the bladder was moving it would in turn move the penis also.  I wish you could get a twitch too Mike.  It takes a very long time for nerves to heal and repair, so don't give up!  They apparently sometimes short circuit and need to find another pathway. 

I offered to call the doc for a sleeping aid, but he said he'll be okay.  He's not one to ever take pills, although he has asked for pain meds this week when he's fading.  He's pretty surprised how rough this has been on him and zapped his energy.  He's got 5 holes in his belly, looks like he's been used for target practice.  By a bad shot I might add!

Thanks again, you guys are the greatest!  It's so comforting to know there's help out there from caring and loving people that want to help others get through this difficult time.  You truly are the pioneers of this journey and will help countless men facing the same issues in years to come.

I believe they are correct about the bladder spasms, I was sent home with prescription to take if they occurred and when it happened I took them and it stopped the spasms.  Seemed like it was always at night. Also was sent home with 2 CIPRO to take day before and day of catheter removal. Glad to hear your husband is doing well.  Praying your path report will all be negative.

I'll put a call in to the doc and see if there's something he can take for it.  Like Bluebird says, he needs his rest so he can heal, there's nothing worse than laying in bed at night unable to sleep.

Marie,

Unless he's having painful twitchng, try to get Randy to relax. Bengin twitching is a normal process and a pretty good sign. He'll experience this to some degree for a while then it should clam down. Believe it or not, he always has had a twitch. Men twitch, so do women. It's so subtle that we just don't realize it, nor do we have a reason generally. With a heightened self awareness, Randy may notice many things he typically never paid attention to. Maybe a mild sleep aid would be helpful for a short time. If he's not getting a restful sleep, his whole body suffers.

Tylenol PM helped me a lot to sleep well during the first couple of weeks post op.  There were a lot of different feelings that I had for several weeks after surgery.  What we men that have had the surgery must remember is that it is major surgery and a lot of trauma occurred in a relatively small area.  For me it took about two to three months before things settled down.  I was hoping that some of those feelings were good signs for ED but that was not the case.  Hopefully it will be for the two of you.

Hi Swim and Tamu,

I told him maybe his body is doing the kegel exercises on its own.  Perhaps the cath is making it more noticable with the movement.  Restless (middle) leg syndrome?  he he  I won't suggest he take the meds for that because he may have a sudden uncontrollable urge to gamble and have sex!  We have to keep our humor about this. tongue

I take Tylenol PM to help me get through the night, especially since his dx. So I'm sure one wouldn't hurt him either, long as he's not taking a pain med with it. He's not feeling as well this morning and I'm assuming its because of the lack of sleep last night.  I'll try him with one tonight and see if it helps him relax to sleep.  Plus encourage more naps today.
