"Screening is recommended starting at age 45 for men with a family history of prostate cancer and for black men, because of their higher risk of the disease."

That's hard for me to believe that any responsible doctor would not recommend testing at 40 with family history and race factors. How many men do we have here between 40 and 50? Too many. Both of our sons (37 & 41) were tested without any hesitation by their physicians once they knew the family history.

Articles like that are so frustrating. Just like the fight for women to have mammograms, this will be the same. You'd think as a society we'd learn. Oh yes, I forgot...this cancer is the "one to get" if you're going to get any.

Geez...don't get me started!

I couldn't agree more with you, Susan.  Leading urologists are beginning to recommend baseline testing for all men at age 40, regardless of family history or race. 

If the baseline PSA is below a cutoff value, the next test would be at age 45, then annually beginning at 50. If baseline values were above the minimum, testing would be done annually.

Newer, more specific tests may make the PSA test obsolete, but right now it is the best tool we have for early detection and possible cure.

Watchful waiting IS a treatment option. But as the study says, I am younger and I have advanced prostate cancer. This option could have been fatal for me before I turned 50.

I watched my dad die with stage 4 PCa. He was in intense pain and was drugged all the time. It took 18 months. He was 81. I got diagnosed at 72 which was probably about his age when he got it. Only he never had a PSA test till it was too late.

Reports like this that imply that old guys aren't worth the effort just infuriate me. Doctors and others that do studies get so wrapped up in the numbers that they lose sight of the objective. So what if I die from something else in the time frame that they say would take PCa to go stage 4. I had cancer. I got rid of it in the most efficient manner available. I'd do it again in a minute...

Hmm..tell that to my dad who was about 75 when he had prostate cancer surgery.

He is now 83 and in wonderful health. His PSA tests have been all zeros since.
He will probably die at age 102.

Where can I get some of those "rose colored glasses"? This monster is like walking through a mine field. I guess with those glasses on you can't see the danger.

As one who is fighting every day, trying everything just to live, I find this article distubing at the very least. So many here are working so hard to spread the word about early testing and proper care. How much damage does an article like is do? As for slow growth. I was tested at age 45, PSA great. Tested again at age 52, seek care PSA 42, Age 55 (soon) no cure.

Who here was in this survey..............anybody..............anybody..........? I thought so.

Well, we will spread the word and we will save lives. Wear the blue. Talk the talk and walk the walk.

Amen, I just had LRP 2 weeks ago and it was worst than the biopsy. Its worth the incontinence and impotence to me. I'm alive for my wife. There are artificial sphincters and implants for worst case scenarios. I was a walking time bomb. I'm 65 and very much alive. I think those articles serve the guys who want quality of life and are willing to gamble with their future rather than suffer a short term inconvenience.
