Jay Leno "jokes" about prostate cancer

Jay Leno has had several "jokes" recently about men having prostate problems.

He went over the line in my opinion Wednesday night when he told a joke relating

to men with prostate cancer. All in his audience got a good laugh about it. I sent an

email to NBC expressing my thoughts on such poor taste. I know it will fall on deaf ears.

I am sure if the joke was about breast cancer there would be a uproar and demands for

an aplolgy, which he would be forced to give.

Do you have that em address? If Mr. Leno is willing to joke publically, I am certain NBC won't mind that we complain about it.

I have a sense of humor, and I am not overly sensitive about jokes about my disease. But I stand with anyone fighting this disease offended by these "jokes". I have always thought that Mr. Leno was a pretty cool guy, though many of his views are one sided or insensitive. I understand that his business is to make people laugh. And laughter is the best medicine by some views. I did a little research on comments he's made...Here is the information:

In his monologue he stated a scientific study had concluded that the more men master b..e the less likely it is that they get prostate cancer, and then said "Well, if that research is correct, I don't understand why any man ever gets prostate cancer!!"

In a previous joke:
"You remember a couple of years ago Pat Robertson announced he had prostate cancer? You think God was punishing him for being a pain in the ass?"

Someone told me he joked about Rudy Guiliani's fight with PCa. If anyone can find it, I would appreciate it. For my part, Jay Leno can continue to joke in this manner. As I have always said, any attention, good or misguided, is attention we need. Mr. Leno can make it up to me by putting a serious note on it in support of our efforts when he uses that type of humor. A sense of humor, even about prostate cancer, was helpful to me in coping with the fears I had after my diagnosis of prostate cancer.  And it brought some sunshine to the dismal mood I fell into.  

Of course, joking about one's own disease is different than someone else joking about it.    

My husband and I joke all the time about what we are going thru. It gets us by and a sense of humor has always been a huge part of our lives. BUT...As TimG said, we can joke, but someone else joking just made me sad. I did write a short note to NBC and I'm not an activist in any way. I just wanted it to be known how I felt about something that hit so close to home.
Alittle whisper in someones ear could change how people think and respond and handle the future.....

Chill out. What we have been and continue to go through is more serious. I need to lighten up more often and I'll bet you do too.

I have no problem with those here that do not take offense

to Leno's prostate cancer jokes. I do have a problem when

jokes about prostate cancer go by with an "oh well" attitude

when if his jokes were about breast cancer or sickel cell anemia

all hell would break loose. A double standard for sure.

 

After I was diagnosed with prostate cancer, I eventually told my work group.  Occasionally, some of the women would ask me how I was doing and showed concern.  The men were silent.

Jokingly, I told the men whom I worked with--there were six of us--that they didn't have to worry about getting prostate cancer, because it hit 1 of 6 men, and in our work group, I was the one. 

That helped to break the ice and make them feel more comfortable talking about it, and from that point on they discussed my upcoming surgery and prostate cancer in general more openly with me. 

Since my prostate cancer diagnosis and treatment, I have had an opportunity to use my own personal experience with prostate cancer to broach the subject with others.  In a few cases, I have a hunch it led to men getting tested and in others, I was able to offer support to those diagnosed with prostate cancer, their loved ones or friends 

OK, now I can't resist going this direction...

amongst ourselves, there have to be some pretty good jokes about all this. Especially with the masturb*tion slant post surgery!  there's a joke lurking somewhere...I just can't put my finger on it!  The post-surgery guy who went to target practice cause he was shooting blanks?  dunnno.  needs work.

anyone have any jokes? humorous stories? from all this?  it does help to laugh at it, as VaFan said.
