Study at the University of Arizona ~ Telephone Counselling.

Hi Guys, With Peters permission I am posting part of the letter I received in Email fron the University of Arizona.  Right now they have 43 study subjects and need 80 for the study to be considered.  This is a very well intentioned study funded by the Feds through the National Cancer Institute.  There isn't a person here that isn't qualified to lend them a hand.  You don't have to have an advanced case, any case is needed.  I told them I would attempt to see if any of my online friends may be interested.  Here is the letter I received, and if your are interested just contact Maria. ...................................................................  I work at the Arizona Cancer Center in Tucson , Arizona through the College of Nursing . This cancer center is affiliated with University Medical Center , which has partnered with Nevada Cancer Institute. I am writing to you in hopes that you will be able to help me too. I am the Project Director for a Prostate Study. This study is for men diagnosed with prostate cancer and their partners (spouse, friend, son, etc.) and is funded by the National Cancer Institute. The purpose of this study is to test the effectiveness of a telephone delivered psychosocial counseling intervention compared to an educational control, on symptoms and quality of life for men with prostate cancer. I would be happy to send you information on this study to see if you and your wife Ruth would be interested in participating. It's like a "support group" via telephone. We provide a lot of support and education for men with this diagnosis and their partner and you know how important that is. Also, if you participate in the study and see how helpful it is, then hopefully you would refer other men with this diagnosis as well. Do you attend support groups? Or if you have any suggestions/recommendations on how I might be able to reach more men with this diagnosis to make them aware of this study I would greatly appreciate it. Can you tell me if there is someone I could contact at Nevada Cancer Institute to let them know about our study? Any assistance that you can provide is greatly appreciated. Thank you. I also am in this study, with my 7th session tomorrow, and our final joint session next Monday.  Even before this study, I have worked hard to not let this disease run my life and my wife's as well.  Has cancer changed my daily look at things - you bet!  Am I more anxious about death - another you bet!  However, throughout my treatments I have worked to have the least amount of side effects and return to normalcy as best as I can.  It is difficult for me to access if this telephone counselling has helped me or my wife, but hopefully information they obtain will be benefitial to others.  If you are in this category, please contact U of A and get involved with this trial.

I just completed my final counseling session in this study.  My wife and I now have the post surveys to take.  I had never thought about talking to a "shrink" about anything.  While my anxiety level about this beast has been high, a lot of my conversations helped put things in perspective.  I have really worked at keeping active and avoiding any of the side effects from my treatments.  I know there are many of us who are having problems dealing with all of this.  Please give the University of Arizona a call and get involved.  It's well worth it.

I've noticed a few new posters who understandably are having a lot of stress surrounding the discovery and treatment of their cancers.  Please give the people from the University of Arizona a call.  Besides the fact that they need more participants, the telephone counseling is free and benefitial.   I don't think I've gone one day since my pathology report without having some thoughts about my cancer, but talking about this is very helpful.

C'mon...Make the call...

I will contact Maria and let her know that watchful waiting after primary treatment is a treatment option, and that the effects of primary treatment can leave us with ED for which we receive residual treatment in a matter that is difficult for many. I may even contact Terry Badger as well. I won't mention a specific case. Thanks for the post, Pete!
