Hi rachy,
I read your site and extend some very sincere thoughts your way. I only have met two guys who, because of prostate canvcer were doing their own catheters. One was because of poor results with his surgery, and the other was because his cancer had spread to his bladder and spasms were making it impossible to treat his incontenence.

Some of the guys here did have urinary tract infection ~ UTI ~ while they had their catheters installed and may be able to speak how they handled treating it. But they are guys, and treating it varies between man and women.

I cannot imagine ever installing my own catheter ~ call me squeemish! I hear that it's tougher on the guys but I truly don't know. I searched on the web for self catheterization and surprizingly there is quite a bit of information about it. I am sure you have seen much of this.

I do wish you the very best concerning your condition. And as a blogger, I wish you the very best in your effort to bring the disussion to people.

A day after I had the cath removed I was at the urologist office with my bladder totally swollen.  The young PA walked in and told me she was going to teach me to self cath.  It was the most interesting part of the surgery, but as much as I could not see that hose sliding through the opening in my penis, the pain of the swollen bladder was greater.  She watched and instructed as I installed the tubing, kept pushing it in until relief came I had 430 CC and was glad to get rid of it.  I spent the next week in the bathroom with my cath, the swelling went away and I was fine.  The one thing it did do was allow me to comfortably lose my modesty.

My husband did self cathing for 12 years because of a spinal cord injury.  In April 2008, he had prostate cancer surgery.   Since the surgery he has been so incontient that he no longer has to self cath.   He now uses the bioderm catheters for the incontinence which is an external catheter that is covered by Medicare.  These catheters work well for him.

When I first saw this post, I knew in the back of my mind I was going to get schooled on this.  This is a great thread.  Obviously, there will be folks in the prostate cancer arena who will need to know more about it.

Again, I would have that inner fear at first ever attempting to do this.  I am certain you all know what I mean and been there.

Thanks guys for your interest and replies.. i too have to self cath 5-6 times a day as i have complete retention but still no dx or explanation as to why?
Its just not many people really talk about it and it is'nt somthing you r friends want to sit and discuss..
