Pain in the butt

Meister - My compliments on your blog. I enjoyed reading your experiences in a narrative style.

Regarding the pain you experienced, I believe that it is normal. Your nerves have been traumatized at best and they are healing. We have always read where amputees will experience pain in the lost limb for a long time. A similar process is working here. I have experienced some rectum pain that felt like I was growing a hemroid.

BTW Our Stats are remarkably similar.

Yeah that is a really nice Blog there for sure.

One thing that caught my attention tho (yeah ancient history for you now) was the nurse/hospital's obsession with you getting a BM practically the same day after surgery.

I guess it is good to mention to all who have yet to go thru this that a quick BM is in NO WAY a necessity any time soon after surgery. And I am sure all your muscles and sutures would appreciate NOT having such any time soon after surgery anyhow.

In my case all the Doc and nurse asked was whether i was yet passing gas (on day 1 after surgery). No I was not .. so that was all they cared about that day.

Turns out that i did start passing some gas, and continued to do so for a few days and then on DAY 4 I finally got my first BM. Of course taking Colace all along those days. It just really does take a while for food to travel all the way thru after the initial cleanout.

Hope this is of help (and reassurance) for any of our brethren coming down the pike that this is NOT something to worry about -- The BM will come when it will come -- you are NOT clogging up or anything (assuming you are taking your softener religiously and eating lots of veggies).
