My First PSA after surgery

Good news for me today. My first PSA after surgery was 0.01, the lowest the equipment can measure. My surgeon says we have to keep watching this every 3-4 months for the next couple of years. My pre-surgery PSA was over 30 for the past few years even though the biopsies did not show cancer until the last one.

The area of concern was the grading (7) and positive margin. He likened the positive margin to a situation where you are trying to round up a hive of bees. You got them all except one that is somewhere out there flying around. Chances are it won't survive without the queen. At least that is the hope.

Congrats to you on your first big Zero, may you have many long years of those ahead of you. And yeah, let's hope that last stray bee is long dead and gone.

This is, indeed, good news. I ran across a study indicating that achieving such a low level post surgery was the strongest predictor of relapse-free survival. (Search on "Using PSA Intelligently to Manage Prostate Cancer".) Ultra-low PSA was a stronger predictor than any other variable, e.g. Gleason, margins, pre-op PSA, etc. I don't know if there have been subsequent studies to support or refute this, but it is worth a read.

Woo Hoo!!!! Yeah for you. I know I certainly breathed a sigh of relief when I got my .01 !!!!! I have had several now and it stays that way.

Congrats! What a great feeling to know that you got those zeros. I was so happy and relieved when I had my first post PSA which was <.05. My second post PSA is also the same and hopefully and we all pray that we got zeros everytime our doctor requires us to get post PSA.
