I saw the Rad Onc yesterday and he recommended SRT, as I expected. He had a cancellation for a set up simulation yesterday afternoon so I stuck around and did it. I now have three little tatto's and a sore penis. You guys didn't tell me they stuck catheters up your rectum and down your penis to do the set up while doing the CT. They could not get the catherter into my bladder (after several attemps with different sizes)due to scar tissue (they thought). I think they just weren't used to people who clamp down their "kegle" muscles. Anyway, they decided not to do the contrast dye in the bladder, so we finished up the simulation. They said it will take about a week to get everything set up and planned to start the real treatments. I have a very sore penis this morning (a glimsp of what David in SC has gone through), but other than that I am ready.  The rad Onc said I could eat anything I wanted and take anything supplement wise except mega doses of anti oxidents. They said about 42 treatments. They want to do another simulation half way through to further zero in on the prostate bed.  Lets hope gasoline does not go up too much over the next 2-3 months as I have a 2 hour drive to the Cancer Center of Maine.

Timm,

I didnt have the catheter so not sure why you would unless you already have one in. Knowing me if they had told me I had to have a cath in 2 places I would have jumped off the table and founf me a faith healer. But good luck with everything, hope the worst is behind you, and no pun intended.

The catheters are a surprise for me. My IGRT pre-scan was not that invasive.

No catheters for me either in the SRT simulation setup.

Just some xrays and tatoos...

I was 4 1/2 hrs from the treatment location,  so I stayed  with friends during the treatment week and drove home 3-4 times on the weekends.  I was worried and thought 7 weeks was a long time going in,  but the time actually was over before I knew it...  and side effects very minimal...

Due to my long history of catheters, it was a surprise to me when preparing for salvage radiation they causually said, btw, we are going to have to put a cath in your temporary. i threw a fit, and i wouldnt let anyone touch me until the radiation oncologist herself came in and i agreed to let her do it herself, as due to my problems, it is no easy matter to put one in without harming me. she knew from talking to my urologist that there would be difficulties.

I am a little concerned that if I ever really need one.....- anyway they will have to put me under to try it next time.

Tim They cathaterized my to put in contrast for the cat scan,then they put a clamp on to hold it in.Then!!! they took a big syringe and filled my urethera up if that wasn't bad enough, after the scan they said it wasn't full enough and did it again. I just thought of the old Beverly Hillbillies joke "what's Jeds last name".Good luck, I'm with you on this one as I just finished day 10. DICK

I had the catheter in my bladder for a contrast test during the radiation simulation.

I remember the Doc saying "This may be extremely painful." Talk about putting a person at ease! Lucky for me there just a mild sensation when the catheter went into the bladder.

The anticipation wasn't great. The relief when it was over was.

I didn't have a catheter or rectal balloon when doing my planning CT scans for SRT. The most invasive thing I experienced was a DRE from the radiation doc and the three tiny tattoos.
