Just received my new PSA number. It increased from 3.95 to 6.18 in 4 months? This is after the biopsy showed negative. I understand it can take up to 3 biopsy's to find the cancer. I see the Uro on Tuesday, I expect another biopsy to be scheduled. So maybe its up because of the biopsy, maybe its aggressive, who really knows. I hate this, now I am completely distracted again.

Did you follow the suggestions to abstain before the last blood draw, no bike riding, etc.?
Any possibility it is an infection?

Yes, I am very dilligent in not doing anything to effect the readings. I have no symptoms of infection. I have noticed some leakage after urination but have had that issue for many years, more when drinking alcohol.

have you been on any antibiotics to determine if you have an infection. You are being deligent in follow-ing up. Before I had a biopsy (and referred to a urologist) my doctor prescribed antibiotics for 30 days to determine if I had an infection. PSA went down but was back up 3 months later. Do follow-up and keep us posted.

Thank you for writing. Other than the antibiotics at biopsy he has never put me on them. I asked him about prostatitis and he said the biopsy would have identified it.

I see that your biopsy had 8 samples. Most biopsies have 12 or 16 that I have read about.

Just curious, was there a reason for only 8?

Surprised as well that he didnt put u on antibitoics first as well. After my first psa was on antibiotics for 30 torturing mental days then took another psa which dropped a little but then had biopsy.

As my doc said with my case being a perfect example Biopsies are not defintive that you dont have PC. My biopsy on one side of prostate was clean but after the surgery that side had more cancer then the side that was positive in biopsy. He said very lucky the other needles on other side hit the cancer cells.....

My understanding of just doing the 8 core samples was that my prostate is very small. The doctor performing the biopsy said that because of this he got a good sampling and was confident that any cancer would be detected. From what I have read here and online more is better.

I would investigate color doppler as well. Sometimes PC around the edges or transition zones don't get picked up by standard biopsies.

Do you have any other symptoms, like burning, pain, weak stream, etc ?

Hey goodlife, I have no other symptoms, stream is good, I usually don't get up in the night unless I have alot to drink before bed and even then its only once, no burning, no ED. This big jump is wierd.

Not sure where you live or what type of doctors ypou have been seeing, but if my doctor wasn't calling me with a plan, I think I would start looking for a second opinion.

I am fortunate to live near several major cancer centers like Cleveland Clinic, U of M, and Ohio State. I found the atmosphere and the level of treatment was very different at these places compared to my Uro.

I credit my success thus far with going to the place where PC is pretty routine. My surgeon had over 800 surgeries, and talked about the prostate like a swiss watch maker would talk about a fine time piece.

Newtopc, I am just waiting to here what you find out on your call back to the Dr. Office. If the PSA did really jump like that and your Uro does not want to at reast retest. Find another Dr to get fresh info. I can tell you I had no symptoms at all with my PCa orther than a jump in PSa.

Anciously waiting neew info.

Get a PCA-3 test. It is simple (urinate after a DRE) and VERY specific for PC.

and I am worrying because my PSA went from 1.00 to 1.3 in a year at 61. My apologies to all of you who have battled this terrible problem and wish you all the best!

For what its worth, the only symptom I had before my diagnosis, was an annoying little dribble after urination...........cheers Kev.
