A friend of a friend has just gone home from hospice to spend his last days with his family. He's 41 years old and had metastatic prostate cancer for at least a year before he was diagnosed. His chiropractor couldn't do anything for his back pain and he eventually took the hint and went to a regular doctor.

Apparently, everything that is said about the appropriate age you should first be checked can be fatally wrong.

You and I are in that group as well. When we were diagnosed the PSA screening standard was 50 years old unless high risk then 45 years old. I can't help but believe that we would have had distant mets if we had only waited a year or so.

Hmmm, "all generalities are false". This statement is itself a generality and if all generalties are indeed false, then so is this one. Which means that all generalities are true? :-)

Generalities are true in most cases, which is why they have that name, but are often there are particular cases where the generality does not apply.

So while it is generally true that PCa is an old man's disease, as these stories show, don't count on it.

People of all ages get all types of cancers. I've stories of 13 year olds with breast cancer. Doctors diagnosis based on logic and probabilities. Its not probable that someone under 50 has prostate cancer. Most PCP never see a case under 55 i am sure. They cant send you for a full body CT scan everytime you come in with back pain. Most people dont have cancer with this symptom under 40. And thats how they operate. Based on what the odds are and their experience of what they usually see.

G - thanks for posting that. I have my quarterly update Monday with my uro and I'm in my quarterly obsessive search to learn more about advanced stage pca. I'm still at the "low and slow" stage and this really really helped me with some perspective. I'm 61 have a 15 month grandson, spent the day pheasant hunting with my 22 year old who shared with me, the times I've inspired him. 35 years ago my wife and I got serious about each other, I get to retire next summer. "daddy's girl" married the son in law I always hoped for and she told me a few week s ago how much that walk down the isle together and the father daughter dance means to her. I have a full and blessed life. thanks.

Sorry to hear this news. I had a friend die last year of prostate cancer at 49. He was diagnosed and died 7 months later. That is why we need to keep our guard up because this cancer is indeed serious.
