John T,
There is a significant downside to aspirin, including smaller doses (81 mg). Aspirin can cause hemorrhaging in the digestive track and elsewhere. The current medical wisdom is that one shoulde not take a daily aspirin unless he/she has significant risk factors for which the benefit of aspirin outweighs the risk.
For purposes of full disclosure I do not take aspirin, because my cardiac risk score is low, as is my risk of colon cancer. I get a colonoscopy every 5 years, and get the full-meal-deal cholesterol screening every year.
This year I plan to get a high-sensitivity CRP, which at elevated levels can be a cardiac risk factor. Some experts recommend a homocysteine level as well, but I don't plan to get one until there is stronger medical evidence that it is useful.
I believe that genetics is a trump card that can be nudged slightly in the right direction by diet and exercise (and perhaps supplements).
