Here is Charlie Rose interview with Dr.Walsh, America´s best prostate surgeon. A bit old, from 2008, but nevertheless, interesting info.

That's a wonderful interview. He seems like a very passionate man and puts to rest some of the tripe we read from time to time on some of these issues.

Thanks for the interview! I would recommend that all men review his latest edition of his famous book.
His views contrast with the USPSTF but that's ok if he can save lives.

Thank you for posting this link for Dr. Walsh, it has been some time since I last watched and I so grateful each time I do.

He has certainly benefited so many by his work... as my Yuro was giving me the initial results of the biopsy, he handed me Dr Walsh's book.  It helped me get my head on straight and allayed the panic of "cancer". As the weeks went by I used the Johns Hopkins James Buchanan Brady Urological Institute website to help me understand my options and decide on treatment.

He is a champion for us all.

A great and trusted icon in the world of Prostate Cancer for sure. His book's latest revision is well worth having, especially to those new to PC.

I made my appointment at Hopkins the day after I watched this. He's the man for his time and place, no doubt.

Nice video. Seems like a sweet guy and we all owe a lot to his research on PCa.

At the end of the video he cites statistics regarding his patients under the age of 60 who had normal urinary/sexual function prior to the surgery
* only 2% need pee pads
* 95% recover full sexual function

I'd be interested in details about those statistics. Particularly, how long after surgery those patients have recovered their continence/potency and whether drugs are needed to achieve that.

Those numbers are pretty high. Top level surgeons advertise rates of high 90s for continence and about 85% for sexual function.

I suspect that their numbers might be that high not only as a result of their skill and techniques, but also because of their patients. The younger and fitter the patients the higher those rates will be.

Sexual function and continence can take up to 2 years to improve. In some cases, like mine, no issues at all. In some others, things don't work out so great. The majority are somewhere in between.

Had radical prostatectomy (nerve sparing) with one of Dr. Walsh's partners back in early 2000. Traveled from Alabama to Johns Hopkins because of his practice and knowledge of the (at that time) new "nerve sparing" approach/technique. Very thorough, inpatient experience good, follow up care was with local urologist with e-mail contact with Dr. Schoenberg from time to time. However the cancer had spread to the lymph node(s) and as you can see by the signature, have been fighting this disease ever since.
Was told back in 2006 that Mario Eisenberge handled the Clinical Trials there, could have changed by now. This was the signature from husbands doctor as of 2006.

was wondering the same thing. He has to negotiate NYC streets and commute on a daily basis, that might be a clue.
