Distinct urine smell

This may sound crazy, but my urine has a very distinct smell since surgery in January '13. No matter what I eat or drink (besides asparagus of course), my urine always smells the same and it is very distinctive - neither good nor bad, just different than before prostatectomy.

Anyone experience this phenomenon?

Is it cloudy? You may have a UTI. Infections often happen from catheters. You can ask your Uro to do a urine test.

No - no problems whatsoever. Just distinctive, consistent smell. Weird.

I had that smell, and a lot of pain during urination 3 weeks after operation.  But they cultured it and did NOT have a UTI.

I guess I just stink!  Eventually it went away.  There is an over the counter bladder pain med called AZO that might help.

some swear by cranberry juice...supposed to make it hard for bacteria to attach to the bladder.  Opinions vary.

Hmmm
I thought it was just me.

But yeah, different now than it was before surgery. I don't normally go a smelling my pee, but this is kinda strong.

It was one of the questions I was going to ask the doc at post op followup, which I had to cancel today.
It's 31 days post op for me, and I have yet to see anyone other than the nurse to get the cath removed on day 7. :-\

If you are noticing any smell that you don't consider normal, worth having it checked for a UTI, very simple procedure, and if needed, they will run a culture on it.

With my Urostomy, you have no idea what foul urine smell exists. Since I pee through a hole (stoma) in my side, the conduit or tube constantly produces mucous which is gross. When I empty the bags or the catheter bag at night, its all I can do not to hurl. Doctor said it was normal for the course, but an unpleasant side effect of having my bladder by-passed.

I had something similar, tested for UTI, came back negative although they put me on some antibiotics. I did use the AZO tablets for a bit because of the pain. Finally went back in for another test and it came back posative UTI, bacterial infection so a differnt antibiotic. 48 hours later pain and smell were gone.
