Do you read other forums within HW

I know I have streaks where I spend too much time on HW. This tends to occur when I am under stress, usually in the form of upcoming major tests or sometimes when I just have a LOT of free time.

Anyway, there have been references to the CP (Chronic Pain) Forum, so I did visit there. I found myself reading quite a few of the threads. They are very interesting and quite sobering, when you read about what people go through. It is one thing knowing about it, but reading the first person accounts, along with the assorted issues (fears, bad doctors, insurance and legal issues, etc) is another story all together!

Do any of you frequent the other forums?

I tried looking for help on the "Breast Cancer" forum (my Mom and Aunt) as well as the "Allergies and Asthma" forum and quite frankly got ZERO. I was totally surprised by that, after the incredible forum we have here on PCa - something that hopefully never gets taken for granted........

Mel, I too check out the CP forum from time. Other forums I have visited (but haven't posted on) are the thyroid forum (I have Hashimoto's Disease) and the breast cancer forum (family history of BCa).

I visit other forums to help some friends get info on their issues.

If other mods are away, I check their forums watching for spammers & the like.

For some boards it is unusual to get as many as one post a day, and that might be a spammer.

I don't read the other boards.  I have another medical issue, but it's not included on HW forums.

I went to the CP forum last year because hubby was diagnosed with frozen shoulder. I found a few threads with other folks that had this also. They were all experiencing the same pain issues. He had surgery in January followed by pt and is doing great.

The frozen shoulder was a bigger issue for him than the pca since he had no symptoms or pain from that. Now that he is 4 weeks past brachy and doing great with that as well, I think this will be a much better year. Just need to wait until October for first post brachy PSA.

there is no forum for gout or constantly scraping knuckles in the workshop.
The only other chronic conditions I suffer from.

Maybe a little off topic, but sort of related.

This thread encouraged me to take a look at some of the other forums listed on the HW home page. They show lot of people with lots of medical issues.

One thing I did notice that struck me as interesting is that in most of those other forums, the majority of posters either don't have signatures as most of us do here, or the signatures that do appear seem to be much less detailed than ours.

Any ideas on why that may be? Granted that PCa is describable by some pretty clear cut numerical measures, as opposed to many other illnesses, but might there be some reason why we PCa types are being more open with our personal medical histories?

We are the exception when it comes to signatures and it is highly recommend that we don't include it if we post elsewhere.

I've read through several of the other forums.. Advise people to Not read through the depression forum to avoid getting depressed. No pun intended.

I am thankful to not have other medical issues, so the PCa board is the only one I need.

I know they have signatures in the CP Forum.

Talk about depressing.

We have one disease, PC, and a ton of information about that.

Those folks in CP seem to have a multitude of ailments. It gives me a sense of perspective, anyway.

I read, but have not posted, on the CP forum. My wife has CP and I reading that forum has been useful in helping her. I also suffer from restless legs and was hoping to find a forum on HW but that is not the case. I have another site I go to for information on RLS.

No, but will check out CP as I've been having lower back and right hip pain (at first we thought it was from my PCa) since the middle of Jan. this year. Looks like I may have to have another Lumbar Laminectomy Surgery (had one Dec. 2004) for Spinal Stenosis (open Decompression). Last Friday morning, I had a lumbar epidural nerve block and doesn't seem to be helping! I have osteoarthritis and a sever degenerative spine. Tomorrow morning, going to my orthopedic to see where we go from here. I know it usually takes 10-14 days for the meds to kick in, but I'm having CP 24/7 and not sleeping much at night (or day for that fact).

Some folks in the CP forum live in very small towns, they prefer to not have a sig line in the event someone that knows them would see info they do not want everyone to know about. If you say google something even to do with PC, there is a very good chance posts from this forum will show up. Its more of a privacy thing, I no longer do a sig line for that reason. Some folks think no one can see what is written on these forums & they are sadly mistaken......Susie

In answer to 81GyGuy, I think you're right about the signatures in PC being measured in certain medical terms as the reason most of you here have detailed sigs but it's hard to find similar sigs in other forums, except may Chronic Pain. In a way it's explaining your journey. On the other hand, there's another diabetes forum in which all the members list their meds and their A1c results through the years. This test seems to generate "clubs". If you can get into the "5's", then you celebrate. And not all 5's are equal. A 5.1 is way better than a 5.8. Still, it's a 5 but one is better than the other.

And now, I do read other forums and I have learned a lot of information about all these different diseases and conditions. (I like the Friday jokes you guys have here, too! tongue )

I go to the GERD forum. There's some good stuff about diet there. Got me off Protonix, except for the occasional bumper. It's not as active as here, but there's a lot of information and homeopathic-type remedies that I appreciate.

On the signature issue. I wish people wouldn't do it. I know it helps some, but it renders the search feature almost utterly useless when trying to find something specific.

I have visited the Chronic Pain forum and the Thyroid forum.  The people are always nice, but there's not that many people there.   Looking at the "Where Do You Live" thread shows how active this forum is.  Actually, I don't know the name of the thread.  Maybe someone can find it for the new people here?

I visit the GERD forum usually right after the PCa forum.  It has helped greatly with my esophageal issues, understanding testing and looking for resolutions. smilewinkgrin

Sometimes, when a member with whom I am not familiar asks a question I will look at their last few postings (from their profile page) to see what is up with them before I answer. Sometimes that involves reading threads in other forums. And, like 142 says, when the mods for another forum say they will be away I will keep an eye out for spammers and other obvious problems .

Just FYI -

There was great discussion between the admin/owner Peter and all the moderators a couple of years ago about the signatures. At that time the signature length was changed from "infinite" to a limited # of characters. Don't know if it's still limited or not.

PC was discussed as the exception to the rule, since you guys have measurable results that can be compared over time and between each other. I don't recall the conclusion about that per se, but that is why PC has long sigs and others do not.

When you post you can choose each time whether or not your signature is displayed or not. And yes, every post is available to be viewed by members and non-members alike. That's why it is recommended that we all choose anonymous user names.

And that's the history lesson for today, folks!

I do go to another outside forum, BCAN or Bladder Cancer Advocate Network. I had both Bladder Cancer and Prostate Cancer along with a AUS that is shared here by more men than in the Bladder Cancer world.

I also like the more level headed conversation here than in BCAN as BCAN tends to be dominated by caregivers than the actual patient.
