She admitted (the same thing the VA admitted in their approval letter) that the Navy kept terrible records back during that time, especially when it came to flight logs and crew logs, etc. Plus a lot of the pertinent records were destroyed over the years by a couple of bad fires at some of the places where vets of my time period were kept.
My coastal surveillance center received a Meritorious Unit Commendation and a Navy Unit Commendation that never made onto my DD214. Years later, at the suggestion of another former sailor, I submitted a request to review my record and update my DD214. I mailed the request (using the official Navy form) to the Navy Personnel Records Center in St. Louis (BTW, Go Sox). The St. Louis Center said they didn't have my records and forwarded my request to Navy Personnel Command in Millington, TN. The Millington command then mailed the entire package back to me with a letter telling me to submit my request to the Navy Personnel Records Center in St. Louis. At that point I decided to forget about
it.
