Where are you hunting? I got A big bull in A2 on opening week. Saw 2 more bulls before I left 3 weeks ago. Thank god for a strong son and ATVs, it's too much work anymore.

Good luck Todd on the hunt.
I went Elk hunting with a real hunter about 10 years ago. He shot one at about 100 yards out across a ridge. Took us 8 hours to get to it. Then another day to get it out. My last big hunt.
I'm sticking to fishing now.

Wow, what a different world. We don’t get many Elks roaming around here where I live in England!

What do you do with the Elk if you do catch one, do you eat it? and YES, that is a serious question!

Umm, Susan, you don't technically "catch" an Elk, you "shoot" an Elk!!!!! And YES you eat it!!!!! Elk (and venison from deer) is some of the healthiest "red" meat you can eat. Three ounces of lean beef contains 247 calories and 15 grams of total fat. Three ounces of venison contain 134 calories and only 3 grams of total fat. And, venison contains about one sixth the amount of saturated fat that beef does. Low in fat, high in protein, stacked with vitamins and iron, good stuff for sure!

The Wisconsin gun/deer opener is 15 days and 1 hour from NOW!!!!

Catching, not so much. As A Yooper says, you may shoot an elk, but often miles from your camp. Then you gut it, cut it into large chunks, backpack it out to your camp on foot, again possibly miles away. They're really big, so it will likely take multiple trips. Quite the effort! But, rewarding enough that people do it year after year.

Blimey guys, sounds like a scene out of a movie and much more exciting (scary!) than my trip to the supermarket on my way home tonight for our weekend meat!

I just Googled a photo of an Elk - right I now see why you would shoot it and not try and catch it!!!!!

Not a fan of Elk steaks. But Elk jerky is another story. As stated above, it's lean. With the right spicing, it's excellent jerky.

I have an excellent Tikka T3 300WinMag from Finland. I have the Grizzly and Rhino equipment which is excellent for hunting. But...

That stated I am more like Marisa Tomee from my cousin ginny...

To catch an Elk all you have to do is go to one of the strip clubs on Bourbon street next July (the 13th through the 17th.) Look for a guy wearing a convention badge who is stuffing money under a garter and take his picture.

A nice elk will feed a family for a year, about 400 lbs of lean meat after butchering. Besides steak you can make great sausage and hamburgers. It's also great for chile and stews. The dogs love the elk legs and they will chew on the bones for days. I've tried everything, but nothing tastes as good as a Moose steak; it's the leanest and best tasting meat on earth. Need to pull a Moose tag next year as just thinking about it makes me hungry.

Catching Elks out here in Vegas is easy. You just go to the local lodge. These old guys don't run very fast.
