onthefence,
that's is what I was talking about
in my "brief update" thread, wouldn't it be nice, if one day, all of us Viet Nam HW PC guys, could have a meet of our own, even if it were a one time event, and get together and talk it all through. I will still volunteer my
location here in western SC if it would help.
if anyone wants to pick up on this thought/idea, please let me know. perhaps we could plan something mid summer or fall of 2014. it doesn't have to be a big production, just a way we could express ourselves both with our war memories, service, and our other common bond: PC.
this is not to take away from the established GFMPH, but in addition to, since there seems to be quite a few of us.

Best wishes to all my fellow veterans. This year in particular, I'm thinking of Jimmy M, --Korean war Marine -- who passed away a couple of months ago at age 80 something. I was Navy, but I always respected Jimmy's annual November Marine Corps anniversary event in his restaurant. One year, my wife and I were eating in the dining room, while Jimmy was hosting the event for the local Marines in the bar -- cutting the cake with a sword. Jimmy, knowing I was a Vietnam sailor, brought a piece of the Marine's cake back to our table for my wife and me--an unexpected and unearned honor from Jimmy and his Marine Corps that I will always remember.

about
two months ago, I took my father, age 91, to a national WWII pilots association get-together in our area. about
25 men attended. It was an amazing witness to living history to hear these magnificent and humble heroes talk about
their time as pilots during that world-changing conflict. It was an honor and a privilege to meet them, most of whom will be dead in a few years. And a reminder of how much we owe--and can never repay--our vets.

Not intended to take away from today's vets, but I'd like to remember those of an earlier time.
My ancestor, the first in my family to die in service of what was to become the USA, and the first in an unbroken chain of Army Infantry to present day, if you excuse one who broke tradition by signing up with the Marines, is James Patton, who was killed by Indians at Draper's Meadow, Montgomery County, Virginia, on 08 July 1755.
My salute, Sir.
Had you not lived, nor would I.

Thank you all Veterans, with particular shoutout to my friends and relatives.
As David was speaking of Vietnam vets in particular, this seems like a good article:

Tim G Just read your Post on your Dad. My biggest regret since I have lived in hawaii, was years ago, could have been a Dday celebration, ww2 vets across the nation converged on Oahu to celebrate with festivities from with Glenn Milleresqe bands , talking story { hawaii pidgin for fellowship} with each other and every one. They saved my, yours generations for the opportunity to grow in the times that have been relatively peaceful. Relative to the holocost that was WW2. Studs Terkel was right it was 'The Good War". Im in fear of when the last WW2 Vet dies and what , the saved generations have left as their legacy for ensuing generations.
