I'm a little bummed out by this moustache-growing adventure. I went to my part-time job at the funeral home, and none of the six people there commented at all. I finally asked somebody if the 'stache was so pathetic that they didn't want to comment, and the answer was "No, we all just figured you were doing it for Movember." So, they beat me to the punch on that.

I live in the suburbs of Chicago, but went into the city for the weekend and crossed paths with a couple Movember participants...both were clearly younger than me (I would say both looked to be in their 30's).

One was late Friday night when we were at a blues club. A guy nearby had a 'stache similar in the amount of growth as mine, and we caught each others' eyes. He simply asked, "Movember?" I replied, "Yeah, man." His reply was, "Cool." No other words spoken.

Passed another guy on Michigan Avenue Saturday afternoon with a similar looking 'stache. We gave simultaneous head nods, and he said "'Sup, Bro." No other words, just a knowing acknowledgement.

The Movember movement is actually VERY active, globaly, among the young guys--much of the message is focused on PC prevention for that age. In Australia, where Movember got it's start 10 years ago, the average age of the participants is 31.

Update--Tough love! Something must be growing since my wife of many years said I look like another "BUM" and then my grandson picked up on it and said I look like a "child molester"..I'll hang tough!

Yooper, hope you're not so good next week either. A Packer game live (first 5 weeks of the season) is on my "to do" list right after a Brazil game at the Maracana.

Teachers and kids, male and female are wearing fake facial hair in my kids middle school! In Italy we'd say the event is now "sputtanato".

Two of my kids are third year medical school students. Daughter in California and son in NYC. They have both told me that many of the male med school students are growing moustaches in support of Movember. The med schools evidently get the word out.

Mine is coming along. I started it about 3 days before the official start date since it tends to grow slow.

Several have commented to me about I must be growing it for Movember. Just word does get out. Even saw a TV commercial the other evening encouraging Movember.

I have intended to, and will here, re-post the encouragement (not solicitation) for others such as yourself to consider a direct donation to the Prostate Cancer Foundation (PCF) in support of the HealingWell Mo Bros Challenge.

This month, the Safeway Foundation is matching all PCF donations...so any donation is "doubled" by Safeway.  Also, anyone who posts evidence of their online donation this month (as A Yooper and gunfighter already have, above) will become "associate HW Mo Bro," and I will count them towards my own planned PCF contribution (the "HW Mo Bros Challenge," as described in an earlier post in this thread) after Movember ends.  (Be sure to obscure your personal information (as A Yooper and gunfighter have done) when you post your evidence; or contact me for help doing so.)

Thanks for sharing your examples of how Movember has been successful already, gunfighter, in your post above from the 11th. And lewvino, thanks for sharing your experiences, too, in your post above from yesterday.   It is especially enriching to see how Movember is reaching-out to the younger generation of kids …to raise awareness of how early lifestyle choices (diet/nutrition and exercise/obesity) directly affect men’s health issues (as well as other health issues).   Many men mistakenly believe that PC “runs in their family,” when it is really an outcome of accumulating too many cancer-feeding environmental exposures/ingestions and too few cancer-fighting exposures (both are lifestyle choices ).   As with most other common malignancies, the majority (75%) of prostate cancers are sporadic , meaning that the damage to the genes occurs “by chance” (via nurture) after a person is born.   [ Hereditary, or inherited, PC is rare (only about 5% of all PC cases) and occurs when gene mutations are passed within a family from one generation to the next.]   Even if there is more than one case in the family, there has been no particularly common evidence of patterns of inheritance; as Dr. Patrick Walsh wrote, “ Prostate cancer is so common that even if there is hereditary factor, there will be other members of the family who will get the disease sporadically .”   More common, however, is that the foundational framework for one's ongoing lifestyle choices tend to get established and passed on within a family .   This is, of course, why it is so important to educate/inform/influence the young generation.   A large portion of prostate cancer cases are preventable .   As Dr. David Spamadi said, “ lifestyle choices are the best course of action in preventing prostate cancer or other disease .” All you Movember participants can take extraordinary pride in your contribution to the effort to reduce prostate cancer in the next generation…! There are a ton of fun examples of young people getting involved.   Here’s a couple cool ones: ·          Great story (and photo) of an 11 year old who is drawing on fu manchu on his peach fuzz this month, and how he has raised $455 as of last Friday.   LINK ·          Winter Park (FL) High School is having a moustache growing contest as part of the WPHS Live.Life.Healthy (LLH) initiative, a student-designed and driven social media, marketing and communications effort to encourage fellow students to live a healthy and safe lifestyle.   LINK     While it is NOT a competition with breast cancer awareness, I have really been impressed with the creative fun people are having with Movember (I posted previously about the fun we are having in my workplace with Movember ).   In the several years that I’ve been a participant here at HW, there has always been considerable bellyaching in October about how “the women are much better than us” at getting the word out about awareness.   I think 2013 has been a tipping-point .   Bellyache no more.   Participate.   Do

I often feel sorry for today's young people when I see what's being offered to them by the current entertainment industry.

 

I wanted to give an update of my own recent Movember “conversations.” There has been three in the last 2 days.   Well, two were just mentions.   It came up yesterday afternoon while I was getting my teeth cleaned.   The hygienist is probably half my age, but she brought it up.   She asked whether the new ‘stache was for Movember .   She talked while working in my mouth about how widespread awareness has grown this year as a result of the Movember movement. Another “mention” was just this morning when a co-worker who I hadn’t seen in a while walked by my office.   He just asked with a single word, “ Movember ?” The real conversation which I’d like to share took place over lunch yesterday with six co-workers, both men and women.   Two there knew I had dealt with PC, others did not (or didn’t profess to know).   We went out to lunch, so the talk around the table went to off-work topics while we waited for our orders. The ‘stache very much served its role in starting conversation, as I was basically asked, “What’s up with the moustache?”   I quickly learned that everyone there had heard of Movember existing to raise awareness of men’s health issues.   After a little discussion, I was asked something like, “so what are the men’s health issues Movember is supposed to raise awareness of?” Of course, this got me talking.   The main point I made was centered around how prostate cancer is really like three very different diseases (or a spectrum of different diseases), and that most people don’t know this fact .   I went on to illustrate with these bullets, and the scope of the impact, about how the main issues are very different for the different diseases : ·          Impacting all men; lack of effective screening technology of undiagnosed men   – impacts millions of men ·          Low-risk disease men; the main issue is overtreatment – impacts hundreds of thousands of men ·          Intermediate risk-men; the main issue is the improvement of treatment modes (surgery, radiation, etc) to reduce side effects – impacts tens of thousands of men ·          High-risk/advanced disease; the main issue is the development of new drugs which extend life (since there is no cure), and the positive affect new drugs have had in driving down mortality in the last 20 years – 30+% decrease down to 26,000 deaths in the US annually   I was surprised at the genuine level of mature interest at the table…everyone listened intently and asked good quesitons.   What other Movember   conversation experiences are others having…?     Post Edited (Casey59) : 11/13/2013 1:55:56 PM (GMT-7)
