I had my annual visit to the dermatologist today to see if I have any new spots. I got a clean bill from her, except for a precancerous lesion on my forehead that will be dealt with by a cream to be applied for 2 weeks.

What was interesting is that she was very interested in my PC diagnosis, and we discussed the apparent fact that there is a non-random correlation between Melanoma and Prostate Cancer. Having a diagnosis of Malignant Melanoma appears to increase the probability of a future diagnosis of PC.

Has anyone else heard/seen this? I suppose that's one more statistic that I'm not sure I want to be included in.

I was not aware of a correlation. I have had a couple of basal cell cancers, but no melanomas yet.

Wasn't aware but I am scheduled to have skin cancer removed tomorrow at the dermatologist office. It isn't melanoma and it the second time since I had my prostate removed. Someone did post a link that showed Viagra increased the risk of skin cancer.

My older brother, who also has PC, had melanoma removed last year from his leg.

His doctor indicated it was likely caused by his light colored skin and working outdoors for the last 40 years.

A quick google search brings up a number of studies that shows an increased risk for melanoma among prostate cancer patients. In my case, I had the melanoma first. And yes, at the first visit 9 years ago, she told me that "by looking at you I can see you have 3 of the 4 major risk factors for MM. Blonde to red hair, fair freckled skin, blue to green eyes. The 4th is at least one sunburn that blistered as a child." Yes on all counts.

Oh well. We all gonna get something.

I had an appointment with my dermatologist last week and she didn't seem to flinch when I told her of my diagnosis and treatment since my last visit with here a year ago.

She got a MD from Vanderbilt, and is very good-looking, so I hope she knows of a correlation...

I haven't heard this before. But FWIW I had a melanoma the size of a quarter removed from my back in 1985. I was diagnosed with PCa in late 2001. I assume they are two unrelated things, but maybe I've assumed wrong.

i had a Actenic (sp?) Keritosis removed about 25 years ago, from my scalp, and was told it was a precancerous growth which put me at higher risk. But never Melanoma, or any other type of skin cancer.

Meanwhile, i have had an enormous amount of sun over my decades, i have always been a sun worshipper. Not smart i know. But i am pretty dark skinned so i suppose that gave me some measure of protection. I last saw my Dermatologist for a full body checkup a year ago. Thinking its time for another check. And from reading this thread, i should probably mention my PC diagnosis to him.

LOL. "Invasion of the Prostate Snatchers"...That doc that had devoted his life to PCa research, when he ended up getting it himself, was asked, "What did you do when you found out you had prostate cancer?" And he replied..."I bought a new putter."


Just had a keratosis removed last week. I've had several basals taken off. All kinds of crap growing on top of.my (mostly bald) head. No melanoma YET.

With all the sun I've had, anything new and I get myself in...

I had a melanoma removed from my back last month.

It was about this big => .

The biopsy sample got the whole thing, it seems. They did a wide excision around the site but nothing was found in the excised tissue.

Hi Everyone,
Had a melanoma (in situ) removed 2 years ago plus many solar karotosis burnt and cut off the top of my head, plus any number of suspicious miles removed. Look like a patchwork quilt.
Have wondered for a long while if there is any correlation between cancers.
A life of sun and surf in the 70s was great at the time , but paying for it now.

I try to see the positive to my having pc. One positive is I have upgraded the doctors that I see. I usually go the dermatologist once a year. This year my wife had me go to UT Southwest. That's the teaching hospital in the Dallas area. The dermatologist had me put a gown on and looked at all the moles I had. Found one on my back that she took a biopsy sample from. Came back first stages for melanoma. Having it taken care of Monday.

Have been out in the sun all my life. My arms now get dark spots from the breaking down caused by too much sun. I feel it was exposure to sun and not a correlation to pc, but you never know.

Same here. Had an in situ melanoma cut out of my wrist a couple of years ago and one area on my back was pre-melanoma (or something like that, abnormal cells that were not squamous or basal). I've had numerous basal cells cut out over the last ten years and several actinic keratosis eruptions.

Grew up in Miami Florida and practically lived at the beaches in the summer.
