Who should use metformin and advodart? And when?

I've read bit about how metformin and advodart are great supplements to standard HT. But I'm still unclear on who should use them and when they should be implemented?

Husband (a G9) just started Lupron and Casodex and will start radiation in next week.

Is this something that should be on our radar? BTW, he is not diabetic, overweight nor does he have high cholesterol.

Though not a Myers patient, I too take Metformin and Crestor which I have read tat Myers says has better pathways for PCa than say Atorvistatin that Medicare prefers.

I take 2000 Mg Metfromin but a word of caution to start out with 500 Mg once a day and then gradually increase to one in AM and one in PM and ultimately 2000 Mg since Metformin can cause some urination urgency issues until his body adapts.

It is an extremely safe drug that has been taken for years by diabetics, can't hurt might help.

My medical oncologist, Dr. Jeffrey Turner, an associate of Mark Scholz and Richard Lam in Marina del Rey CA gave me the OK on this combo.

Metformin, Avodart, and statins are not supplements. They are prescribed medicines. Talk to his doctor(s) about them and if they are appropriate.

Yes, I understand that this is not a "supplement" in the sense that vitamins are. I know that these are prescribed drugs.

But what I still can't find an answer to is when should someone start these???? Should husband be starting these ASAP or wait until he is about through with his course of HT??

I was told to start avodart and casodex and cabergoline about three weeks before radiation. I waited ten days after casodex to get Lupron shot .

I was put on
Pentoxifylline and sucralfate when I started radiation and two weeks later I started metformin. The latter can cause nausea so they were not introduced all at once.

Like Nomar said no sense in delaying what is helpful!

I wasn't clear....sorry...prescribed medicine as in a prescription is needed....and might be tough with certain docs. Try your family doctor.

That is a wonderful thought Break60 but unfortunately our financial situation (and an elderly mother to take care of) would not allow us to spend 9 weeks in Florida. I wish!!

I went to a medonc who told me he would prescribe the standard treatments and I'd be dead in five years. This was not news to me but I found it a bit disconcerting that he was so frank.
That made it easy for me to decide to go with a practice that thinks outside the box. The incremental (increased) cost to me is 1. Higher precription drug costs due to taking more types of drugs, 2. Extra living expenses due to receiving treatment away from home, and 3. Higher travel expenses connected with getting to and from the treatment facility and home. All the treatment costs, although much more comprehensive and thorough than I would have received near home cost me zero being on Medicare and having a medigap insurance plan. So the total additional cost will be about $6500, most of which is the cost of renting a condo for about 2 1/2 months.
And all of this is tax deductible.
Easy call compared to having a shorter life!
