I know this is off topic for this forum but I thought I would take advantage of this mostly male audience. Any of you that have or had a hernia what advice can you give me. I need to decide if I want to go through with surgery or wait until it get worst? open or laparoscopic surgery.

I had one. I waited until the pain was worse than the thought of having surgery. my was laparoscopic and I was happy I got it done. Painful for the first couple of weeks after surgery, but fine now.

The question real is how much pain are you in now? That's the main reason to get it fixed.

Had three hernias fixed laparoscopically last July. The recovery wasn't bad--only took one pain pill, then ibuprofen for a couple of days. Less pain after the surgery than before. Had a really good surgeon. Things went much better than expected.

how may days should I expect to be out of work. I am in sales so I am either in my car or at a desk.

I have had two inguinal hernias repaired with open surgery. I was off work for about a week each time. I would definitely have it done as this year, I had a friend die from a constriction that could have been repaired but was not.

Dun think hernia is an off tropic here...quite a nos of us got hernia after RALP
Got mine inguinal hernias repair last year May...An open surgery, recovery was quite fast, I think within couple of days. But restricted to lifting of heavy objects for a couple of months.

What type hernia is it? Incisional or inguinal? I`ve had both. My left side inguinal hernia was repaired in 2001 via open surgery. This mesh patch repair went well and have had no recurrence in that area. I developed an incisional(ventral) hernia a few months after my prostatectomy 8/1/2011. I had it repaired the following spring. The surgery failed. A CT scan showed that one end of the mesh patch had torn free from the staples. Bad surgery? certainly possible but I probably exceeded the 10# wght. limit and as I recall I a had a bad cough shortly after the surgery. In any event, I have not had any further surgery. At my age (78) I`m not anxious to have more surgery unless it acts up. Good luck.

Make sure you use a good surgeon. My husbands repair has bothered him since it healed.....his rp surgeon sounded really pissed off after rp surgery about how huge a patch was there. She said she unstuck it from the surrounding organs/tissues that it wasn't meant to be stuck to.

I had my double hernia repaired when I had my prostate removed.
