Hello all,

Simply put....I am wondering if any of you have been able to get access to non FDA approved drugs or treatments via "compassionate use"? If so, how was the experience and how exactly did you obtain the drug or treatment?

Are you talking about drugs that are in clinical trials with the aim of getting FDA approval or are you talking about "dietary supplements" that require no FDA approval and are sold OTC ?

While "compassionate use" programs still exist, they have mostly been converted to "Charitable Foundations" that require you have some sort of prescription drug coverage before they help with the co-pays and donut holes and such....But if the drugs are not FDA approved there is little chance of getting any freebies....

Fairwind, I think CADguy is referring to medical use of an illegal herb, that has recently become legal in some states. Don't tell anyone, but I should have access by the end of July.

It's an FDA program that allows doctors to prescribe investigational drugs that may be in current clinical trials that the patient may not qualify for or ones that have ended. The drug manufacturer has to agree.

Actually, I am trying to get access to Prostvac. I am not eligible for any trials using it at this time.

It all starts with your doctors determining what treatments you need and can get. If you don't qualify for the trials I don't know how you would get it as it isn't yet approved in the US. As Tall Allen says you would have to go through your doctor and the manufacturer. Then there is the cost. Certainly insurance and Medicare will not pay for it until it is FDA approved.

CADguy, just a warning, it can be embarrassing getting one of those through airport security. Believe me, I've been there done that.
